Burda Style For people who sew

Description

The costume was made to order for a colleague’s little boy.
I have searched high and low for a straightforward pattern, but no joy.
So I made mine using the following steps:

1. Piece of white satin (the child’s height x 2 – for instance 2 meters) wide enough to cover the distance between child’s fingers when he/she has the arms stretched.
2. Draw the contour of the costume with a pencil: a small gap for the neck, then the sleeves (I have designed big bell sleeves for a more dramatic impact) and slightly flared body.
3. cut through both layers of fabric.
4. At the back, cut a slit in the middle long enough to allow the head to get through. I used satin bias binding around the neckline and along the back slit. I sewn a tiny hook at the back.
5. Sew the sleeves and the body on the sides. Clip the fabric at the underarm, so it curves nicely.
6 Finish the bottom gown line and the sleeve with bias binding.
7. Decorate with silver or gold ribbons around the neckline, sleeve cuffs and bottom close to hem. You can apply to strips if you feel lucky!
8. Make two thin strips and sew on garment, where the waistline is.
9. Tidy up all seams and use a silver or gold thick cord for a belt. Optionally, use ribbon to make two crossed lines on the chest.

The costume in the photos is modelled by my little boy Dominic. The halo was made from silver tinsel wrapped up around florist’s wire.
