Butterick 6410: Misses’ Jacket & Dress: Close-fitting jacket, above waist has shoulder pads, raised neck, attached tie, hook/eye closing and long sleeves. Semi-fitted, slightly flared dress, floor length has raised neck/waist, contrast bodice, cap sleeves, princess seams and side zipper. Both garments are lined. Purchased purse.
This is a very well-drafted pattern. There are some corners to match up, but this is a very easy pattern to put together – which was a good thing because I was very limited on time!
That being said, the pattern envelope mentions a pair of shoulder pads for the jacket, but the instructions never mention them. Oopsie! I think they add something to the silhouette, so I made myself a pair. I have a little tutorial over on my blog, if you are interested. Just remember to baste them in before attaching the lining!
I just adore this pattern – I cannot believe it took me this long to make this up! It really is a shame that this one is out of print. This is one of the more accessible retro designs, and I am not sure why it disappeared so quickly.
I decided to use an invisible zipper because the design is rather streamlined, and I thought it would work better than a lapped zipper application. There is no belt to keep that zipper flap flat, and I am pleased with my decision. A strip of organza helped with zipper insertion – it stabilizes the opening brilliantly.
I already have ideas for the next version I would like to make – it will just depend on an occasion and finding the fabrics! I would highly recommend this pattern if you can get your hand on it – and be sure to pull it out if it is hiding in your stash of patterns.
I am thrilled with how this one came out!
And as always, more pictures and info may be found over on my blog, Lilacs & Lace.
