Knitty Gritty: BurdaStyle 03/2012 knit sweater #146.

Believe it or not, these are 152 identical replications of 16row x 8stitches lace pattern. Not to shabby for my first ever attempt at lace knit.

It was exceedingly hard to get going — ripping lace pattern is easier said than done — so the first few rows took several weeks. However, patience is a virtue. Once I got a hang of it, it almost knitted itself in course of two weekends.

It fitted perfectly before I washed it, but got a bit elongated when it was drying (damn you gravity!), hence the extra long and snug fit, which comes out quite nice — no harm, no foul. Although, the sleeves are a tad too long.

Technical notes: I added an extra repetition of the lace pattern to the sleeves (since I have extra long hands), which are now unnecessary due to the elongation. More importantly, I knitted the front and back pieces simultaneously using circular needles (note, to remember to omit the 4 selvage stitches when casting on). Similarly, for the sleeves I used circular needles, except for the rib pattern (which was traditional back and forth), thus casting on selvage stitches is necessary for the sleeves.
Moreover, regarding finishing, instead of casting off stitches at the sleeves and torso, I had corresponding pieces right-side facing in, and purled corresponding stitches together and casting off as I went along. It comes out knitted on the right side, and the casting off is not noticeable.

For future reference: Need to learn how to properly wash lace knit without it drastically getting out proportion.

Material Notes

Roughly 200 gr (4 skeins of 50 gr/175m) of Norwegian Baby garn (100% merino wool). Circular needles 6mm and 7mm — 40cm for sleeves and collar and 80cm for torso (I recommend KnitPro interchangeable needles). Blunt embroidery needle for finishing.
