Description

Halloween costumes, modeled after Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. The coolest part of this project was making the satin texture. In the movie it was pleated, but that would have been a LOT of ironing for something that I’m only going to wear once, so instead I used a costumer’s trick to created a sort of crinkled pleat look. I basically twisted the satin till it coiled on itself, then I boiled it for a bit, then I set it out to dry. After a day of drying I unwound it and sewed with it. It’s definitely not pleats, but it gives a more textured look, which is close enough for a costume. (I think!)

Satin

I absolutely love this! So much so I featured a link to it in a regular blog post I do on ‘projects I am loving’. You can see it here:

      So very sweet of you!

Sorry, I didn’t see your post till now…I’ve been doing more “crafty” things instead of sewing, so haven’t been checking into burdastyle much! I’ll have to take a look at your blog!

Thanks solsticefire. Did you end up wearing something else for Halloween? I went over to your studio to see, but I didn’t see a costume posted. – The work you had up was beautiful though!

Oh, I did not get the chance to sew something up this year! :( But ever since I saw the dress in the movie, I’ve thought it would be amazing to try and make! You did a beautiful job! I especially like how you texturized the fabric… how brilliant versus trying to pleat the entire thing. And your pup makes the perfect companion :)

It was difficult! When we were inside the house, she would lay her head down immediately and sulk with her head in her paws. For some reason she did a little better at sitting up while we were outside, but it definitely didn’t stay on for longer than a few minutes – and that was if I was nearby commanding her to “stay.”
