Description

I dream about original Alfred Shaheen dresses but gave up any hope of owning one a long time ago. Now I can make my own!

This dress was made using Gertie’s Sew Retro course on Craftsy. It was an amazing course I can’t wait to use it again! The techniques learned will definitely change your sewing for the better.

I additionally made a ’50s bolero to go with it from a Simplicity pattern in my stash.

Material Notes

I used Poly Shantung to make the dress more budget friendly.

WOW! Very nice, I am getting the Gertie book for my birthday! Can’t wait. Plan to make this dress too!, My daughter has long red hair and your figure , so I want to make it for her. She is into the Katie Perry Look as well. The shantung in green looks so lovely. Congratulations. Was this a first attempt or are you a seasoned seamstress ?

I’ve been sewing since my junior year in high school. I took a basic class and most everything I learned from there has been self-taught so I guess you could say I’m seasoned. There is always more to learn. :-)

It is perfect on you! Did you do much alterations with the bust pieces?

I did! I extended the upper bust piece up about 1/4" to give me a little more coverage. Burda style patterns do tend to cut their necklines rather low so this wasn’t a surprise.

love love love this dress! i just signed up for the course—i am feeling a bit overwhelmed about fabric selection, etc. the possibilities are endless! I love the green of your dress—i though i would go simple—but that is so stunning i am forced to rethink it!! :)

Fabric selection is always the hardest thing for me too…especially since this one is time and labor intensive. I’m sure you’ll make lovely choice!

    T-straps on a Brooklyn girl!

She won’t be turning heads, she’ll be snapping necks all the way to Manhattan, and quickly collecting dirty looks from unappreciative Park Avenue mavens.

    WHAT A DRESS!

It wasn’t difficult but Gertie’s course is labor intensive with many small steps that make up the whole dress. t was certainly a test to my short patience as I like instant gratification in my projects. It took me about two weeks of working on it a little every day in order to complete it.
