Description

For the most important day of my life I chose to make my own wedding dress. There was a fair amount of stress involved a few tears but it was well worth it in the end. I had an amazing wedding day that I won’t soon forget in a dress I’ll also never forget.

After trying on a heap of dresses in a bridal shop I selected a style that I loved and started my sewing with Butterick 5325. I made a full calico muslin and altered the basic pattern into a sweetheart neckline and added a large pleat at the back. I also omitted the zipper and instead created a lace up back & extended the internal boning and lining.

If you are interested in the process I went through you can check out my blog for more information here

Sewing your own wedding dress is a huge challenge but very rewarding and I’d encourage anyone who’s considering it to give it a go.

Material Notes

Silk, lining, lace, sew-in interfacing, boning, corset tape, ribbon, thread, patience.

Beautiful! I am making my wedding dress for my July wedding and I really need to start my muslin now and then buy my real fabric. I just read your blog entries about it – thanks for sharing, it’s very helpful to read how others have gone through this process. You look gorgeous and the dress does not look home made, it looks store bought, but much better fitting!

I’ve said it once, but I’ll say it again, stunning! As gill said, the dress looks classic , something that can be passed down if you have a mini Mel :P
