A dress from the Japanese “Stylish dress book”. A friend bought the book for me as a thank-you present and this is the first dress I made from it. I neglected to check the measurements across the shoulder so I’ve ended up with a dress that’s a bit tight for this western frame. At least I know for next time!
Sorry for the poor pics – no camera love for me today.

I recently bought a copy of this book and afterwards wondered whether I would like any of them. Most of the dresses look like they’re swimming on the model so to see one made up and on a real person (as opposed to a petite Japanese girl) is great. I guess the secret is to measure yourself against the pattern pieces. Your dress looks great.

I always think they look too oversized to flatter most people but so far I’ve been pleasantly surprised. I think you must be right about the measurement comparisons, I know I’ll be doing it next time.

Hi there. I have made this tunic/dress a number of times in different sizes for different sized friends and I have found that it is always tight accoss the front so i normally go the next size up (even for myself) and it always fits fine and is roomier. Alternatively I will next time make the armhole a centremetre longer under the arm and the sleeve longer also to allow more room for movement. Looks great though. !

I’m still wondering how I might fix this version but at least I’ll know for next time. Thanks for the up-size advice!
