Burda Style For people who sew
Description
For whatever serendipitous reason, everything came together on this project, even though I did no planning.
I found the fabric – strawberries! in an adult print! – at the local fabric district while running around doing errands. I was completely enchanted and completely indulgent – I bought 4 yards of it.
Then with no idea of what to do with quite so much fabric, I started by drafting a playsuit for myself, based on an existing one in my wardrobe. My draw-around-the-garment skills must be non-existent though, because the fit was awful! Tight in the crotch. Tight in the waist (though I added 2in to the original). Too short in the waist (though I added 3in to the original).

That explains the lack of pics of my suit.
Well, with oodles of fabric left over, I decided to make a dress for the big girl. That led to a top for the little girl.
And then I saw the Groupon advert for a nice little cheapie photo shoot.
And that was that!
Material Notes
4 yards of a really lovely light cotton voile for 3 garments. I have about 1/2 yard left over.
Patterns used were:
- Big girl: Burda mag 5/2012 #148 Children’s Dress
- Little girl: Burda mag 7/2011 #143 Girls’ Blouse
- Mine: self-drafted

Oh yes do! Sewing for kids is much more fiddly than sewing for adults because everything is so small, and the ruffles on girly clothes are SO tedious. But the results are worth it!

I was so afraid of the matchy-matchy! I think making different things for each person worked some, and the Man flatly refusing to wear strawberries worked in favour too!

OMG love it! My niece is now 18 months so will start to look for patterns to sew for her. How old is your youngest as i love that top you made…actually I love it all!

She was about 20 months old in the picture, though small for her age, being asian and all. I had to grade the pattern down quite a few sizes.
It’s ok if you make childrens’ garments bigger though, so she’ll be able to wear it for longer!

So cute! I am always very jealous of kids clothes (!) because they’re always made with beautiful material, so it’s great you got in one the act too! Even happier to discover there’s a fabric DISTRICT in Singapore – we should be moving there next year – I can’t wait to explore! :)

Thank you! I make kids’ clothes for the same reason – an excuse to use fabrics that I can’t pull off myself! And yes…there is a district…though quite small and not all the fabric shops are located there. Not very much like the ones in other cities. Ha ha! I can’t wait to have kids for this reason! I saw some amazing fabric with penguins on the other day and was SO tempted to make a top with it… Luckily I have no control, so I am making it today and will soon be looking crazy!
