The Every-Body Bikini – Simplicity #6353 1974
Multikini – Butterick #6674 1974
I stitched these two bikinis up by following a couple of vintage patterns. Both vintage photographic print remnants appear to be wool but look similar to t-shirting, were wider than they were long, and were stored with the patterns. I practiced using a twin needle, and also a ballpoint needle with zig zag top-stitch. I’m too shy to buy or wear a bikini believe it or not, and (obviously) that’s why I thought I’d make one (er, two) instead. Not sure how long either of these skimpy two pieces (I may as well wear underwear lol!) would hold up to the sun, sea, chlorine, and sand, for – but they were at least terrific practice for sewing. I decided to (fairly heavily) line them both.
early ’70s crosswise-stretch medium-weight directional photo-collage printed wool-based knit fabrics, tan wool knit lining, 90s black stretch lining, rattail satin cording in pink and blue, elastic, vintage plastic bikini clasp, 2 vintage shell buttons on halter top strap.
