This is my entry for the Bernina “Party Through the Decades” International Competition.
I was inspired by Audrey Hepburn in “Roman Holiday (1953)”. I want to create a ball dress for my daughter next year, and made this dress with patchwork – the Grandmother’s Fan.
To me, I think it’s more like a costume then a ball dress. Patchwork used to do quilting, hardly used in garment, especially it’s difficult to make nice shape in evening gown.
I spent over 40hrs for the designing and thinking about every detail, and drafted patterns myself.
Then I spent around 60hrs to construct the garment – made up by 240+ pieces and weight about 1kg.
It’s a big challenge to me, after I solved lots of problems and redesign it, finally my dream becomes real!
100% Cotton.

I am also a quilter and a dressmaker but it never came to my mind to combine these two – and i deffinetly never gonna do because your dress looks so complicated! I would never be patient enough for something like this – my deepest respect! It looks wonderful!

Thanks! This is my first patchwork.
Half year ago, I saw a quilting work, I loved it.
Then I keep thinking how I can apply these skills in fashion design. Finally I got it.
