Here is my suit contest entry!
I have used the Eva jacket and Kasia skirt.
Eva Jacket:
I have altered the bottom hem of the jacket, making it more curved. There are also curved cuffs on the shortened sleeves. And gathered sleeves- I really wanted to try this on something like a suit to see what effect it would make.
- A waist band is used instead of buttons on the jacket too.
Kasia Skirt:
I really wanted to do a variation Kasia – to somehow keep all the elements that make Kasia a great skirt pattern while making it a simpler to make for those trying it for the first time!
- I have taken out the front open pocket pouch and just made simple pockets in the same shape.
-The ruching on the pockets have been omitted and 4 of the buttons on the front.
- At the pocket area I added 3 pleats to create a sort of bustle effect on the hip area – taking influences from edwardian fashion I have been looking at lately.
Material Notes
- Soft Grey Gabardine -suit - Poly lining - Floral remenant (for pockets) - I bought for £0.60p years ago!

My husband, who if he hadn’t rejected this fabric for the trousers I wanted to make him for xmas I probably wouldn’t of had time to get some to make the suit!

To help you press these difficult fabrics you can try a mix of half-half water and white vinegar to help set the folds. I have made dance skirts out of a polyester gaberdeen and it was so difficult to press the curved hem allowance upwards. Lots of steam and the vinegar mixture in a spray bottle helped me through it.

Oooh, gaberdine is tough. Maybe try a pressing cloth next time or like Akwa said, an understitch?

Oh cool thanks guys!! thats helpful- I think it maybe polyester actually- I don’t know. Huff …I wish I knew about it’s bad pressing quality before making the suit out of it!! Oh well!. I will try and top stitch parts of it Akwa, and perhaps the steaming too Lauriana.

I like your suit! However, like ilovealgebra, I was going to mention pressing the seams. It’s just such a shame to see on such nice garments. I may have some advice about it. First of all: do you have any idea about the fibres used in your fabric? Gabardine can be 100 percent wool, 100 percent polyesther and anything in between. I once used a polyesther garbardine wouldn’t flatten no matter what, and although I’ve no experience with wool gabardine, all my other wools and wool blends are very easy to press. Another tip would be using lots of steam while pressing (a steam iron is really recommended in this case, but a damp cloth between your creation and a really hot iron also works). With steam, you can use a higher heat and it helps ‘set’ the folds.

I think this fabric has an elastic component / behaviour. I worked with such a material, once, humm not easy. Maybe some understiching could help? (topstitch the lining with both saem allowances, without stitching the shell fabric).
Anyway, this suit is a really nice combination and Kasia skirt fits you beautifully.

Thanks ilovealgebra, I did press the seams- a number of times!! but they wouldn’t flatten! I don’t know why?? any ideas? I turned up the heat on the iron but it started to dis-colour the fabric so I stopped and left them like that. Maybe it’s the fabric?? I haven’t used gabardine before so…??bx

oh wowee! i love this. especially all the edwardian detailing and ruffles. this looks so lady like and yet not the wanky corperate ones that you usually buy. great job. and dont worry about lining, i cant do it yet either…

Oh the lining didn’t come out well at all- i’m still learning about how to do it properly and hand stitching the hem and cuffs I found difficult too- I think my thread was too thin anyway- all things to improve on!bx

very smart about the skirt! i also thought about doing normal pockets, but in the end just didn’t want to mess with it :) haha! somehow i missed the lining before- looks nice!
