The September Challenge at The Monthly Stitch was vintage. Now, that’s not really a challenge for many of you lovely ladies, but for me, well… a spaceship to the moon is an easier build!
I did seriously consider the beautiful retro blouse pattern but decided it was above my skill set and regretfully searched for something simpler. After agonizing for hours over my options, I discovered that the 1950s was the decade of the apron. Wow, something doable.
Serendipitously my mother-in-law sent me a pattern and some fabric a year or so ago, so I had all the supplies. And what a fun apron it worked out to be!
The pattern called for the ties to be made in a contrast color, but I liked the look of an all-in-one, so it required some ingenuity to manage to get all the pieces cut out of the scant two yards I had. I was awfully pleased with myself when I did it, although I did curse myself a little later as I battled with the logistics of a bias-cut waistband. A little twisting and tweaking got it done, though, so it ended well.
All the ruffles were supposed to be edged with bias binding and Mom G had kindly sent me 3 packets of the stuff. Of course, as I am never satisfied to let well alone, I decided that not binding the ties (which were to be hemmed, according to the pattern instructions) would look odd, and took it upon myself to edge them too. 1/4" bias binding on cotton makes for fiddly mitred corners. What was I thinking???
Now that it’s all done, I think it’s one of my best makes yet. Neatly finished, and it looks like the pattern envelope (mostly). I’m very pleased with myself and my apron. Even though it’s totally impractical and will probably never get used. LOL
