I designed and made this coat last summer. It is made from barkcloth which was popular (mainly for upholstery) from the 1940s until the 1960s. It is midi length and single breasted with a shawl collar in contrasting pique cotton. The same contrasting fabric forms the cuffs on the 3/4 length turn-up sleeves. There is a seperate yoke at the back which is lined in oyster satin. Under this is the main back piece which has a centred box pleat in both the bodice and skirt section. It has 3 buttons at the centre front as well as a self-fabric tie belt, and has in seam pockets in the side seams. The bodice section of the coat has french darts and the inside of the coat is lined in oyster satin.
Vintage print hawiian barkcloth in slate blue with cream and pink orchids. Oyster satin lining.

Very attractive (I’m impressed that you drafted this yourself!) and the large-scale print actually works well with the contrasting plain cuffs and collar.

This is the most feminine coat I have ever sean!!! It is so well made. I adore the clean lines, that the coat is not filled up with thousand extras, but although it is very chic. I also would appreciate a pattern, if there is any possibility.

Thank you for the lovely comment. At the moment the pattern is buried in amongst a pile of books and folders so will hunt it out at some point. When I figure out how to upload patterns it is definitely a possibility. I will keep you posted.

Thank you. I drafted the pattern myself and at the moment it is buried somewhere in a massive pile of folders. I have yet to figure out how to upload patterns but it is a possibility for the future. I will keep you posted.

I’ve seen barkcloth re-used in all sorts of ways…this has to be the best. Barkcloth has the right weight for a coat but rarely works well for a dress, a skirt or Heaven help us, a blouse. It’s also over-scaled which also works against it for most garments…but you’ve effectively broken the rules for an outstanding coat. I hope you’ll wear this for Easter…maybe with a sky blue cocktail hat and matching netting and gloves. You’ll be the belle of the church!
