Description
I made this coat or “topper” from Butterick 2969, a vintage pattern from 1944 I bought on Etsy. It makes a loose-fitting 3/4-length woman’s coat, also known as a topper. I made it from an old wool blanket (see pic). The facings and collar are interfaced with hair canvas. I decided to retain the original blanket stitching at the cuffs and hem, in honor of the fabric’s original purpose.
The coat is part of my November 1944 Outfit Project, that included a jumper and blouse (Hollywood 1321). It is modeled by my cousin Cathy, sporting a new Lana Turner-inspired look.
You can see more pics of the coat via my blog, Male Pattern Boldness.
Material Notes
The coat is made from a “dusty rose” pink wool blanket edged in green yarn blanket stitches. The coat is lined with poly crepe-backed satin.

really nice, I LOVE the muff, it’s so cute, did you do a post on the muff? is it faux fur or real?

At first I assumed it was faux, but then people were telling me it was real — sheared rabbit or something. I paid $3 for it at the flea market: couldn’t resist!

Oh man, you´re incredible :). I love the colour, and I´d love a coat of this exact shade too… If you didn´t tell I wouldn´t have guessed it´s made from a blanket.

Pink and grey= the perfect combination. You’ll make me start on a mini 1940s wardrobe, something I’ve always dreamed of having. This is great style.

Cathy Lane in 2012.
She’d put the military in thrifted ensembles, give the treasury pocket change to operate on, and get us to become a fashionable nation merely by her example.
I wonder how she’d look in a pantsuit?
