Burda Style For people who sew
Description
A dress made for myself based on photos I saw on the internet of a 1940’s dress that I just loved the look of. The skirt and sleeve patterns were from two separate dresses I’d drafted and made previously and I knew they worked so I just needed to make a bodice pattern to complete this dress- so actually real ‘frankenstein’ pattern. Getting the amount of gathering in the bodice was tricky in the crepe, I had to cut it twice and sew, unpick and re-sew all the shirring rows a few times as well. I put the zip in by hand. I fused the back of the upholstery embroidery before cutting it out from its main fabric. The edges are all held down with buttonhole stitch done in heavy silk thread.The skirt is cut on the bias and hand hemmed- also done twice as it was an inch too long to look good with a particular coat. It took me about 50 hours all in all but I am very happy with the result.
Material Notes
Main fabric is heavy satin backed silk crepe, the yoke and sleeves are rayon/silk velvet and the embroidery was was cut from an upholstery sample and hand appliqud on (with a little BondaWeb fusible help)
