This is a bathing suit I’ve made for the annual week-long D Day event organized by the sea in Hel in Poland.
The bathing suit is based on the BurdaStyle Retro Bikini pattern, made out of a beautiful dark green cotton and synthetic blend and a dark blue synthetic fabric. The top is generally the same as in the pattern, I just simplified the side strap pieces into plain rectangular strips instead of curved ones that tie at the neck. As for the lower part, I gave up on the elastic finishing at the back, sewing in a similar rectangular strip which also ties on the back.
As for the bottom of the swimsuit I had to alter the underwear pattern greatly to get the perfect fit in a non-elastic fabric. The underwear is permanently connected to a circle skirt by a rectangular strip which ties the bottom of the suit up at the side. The circle skirt gives the bathing suit a flirty/Marilyn Monroe feel in the bellowing wind, but thanks to the underwear underneath doesn’t let the wearer stress out about the skirt flying up too high.
Being one of few reenactors who don’t smoke, it’s quite obvious that it was my skirt that ended up with a cigarette butt hole in it. After I returned home from the event I had to fix it up with a patch from the same material in the form of an ivy leaf with embroidered leaf veins. Appart from matching the skirt in color, the ivy leaf is also a nod towards the name of the reenactment group I am in.
