I’ve long wanted a pair of 1940s jeans. So last year I set about doing research to get a feel for how it is they really would have looked. I consulted many online photographs of women from the time in jeans and also my “Fashions from the 40s as Featured in Sears Catelog” books for inspiration. Armed with the overall pattern from Evadress.com (which features a trouser pattern) I set about to make my own.
I managed to sew them about 75 percent of the way through, tried them on and declared them a massive FAIL. Fast forward a year and I dig them out of my junk pile, try them on and wonder what the heck I was thinking? The fit was great and all that remained was the side seams, zipper, waistband and button closure!
Modifications to the original pattern include self drafted curved pocket, tapering the legs and moving the zipper/button closure to the left side pocket (as they would have done originally). I’m quite happy with the result!
Non stretch (this is very important for an authentic look) denim.
