I made this gown for a murder mystery party set in the 1930’s during the engagement party for a member of the “mob family”. I found the pattern (Simplicity 5876), which was out-of-print, on eBay. I found the wine-colored satin on the clearance aisle at my local fabric store. It was much smaller than I anticipated, so I ended up wearing a skin-tight waist cincher underneath. A purple zipper was added in one side, and the rose on the bodice was tacked on with thread. The bodice and skirt of the dress were both lined with wine-colored lining fabric. The hardest part of the dress were the cuffs on the sleeves, which needed fusible interfacing to stiffen them. Even though it was fairly tight on me, I enjoyed wearing it to the party.

It is beautiful and suits you wonderfully. If I may, it’s a real pity you didn’t go all out and get your hair in waves: it would have been perfect! Next time you should totally try the wavy hair and a brooch pinned to the side! Great work!

Thanks! If I had had the time, I would have totally gotten my hair done. However, we were actually visiting our friends in Seattle (one of whom had written the murder mystery and had invited us to participate), and we’re from the Midwest, so we had spent most of our short time there doing touristy things. By the time the party rolled around, I was too tired to do anything special with my hair. If I ever wear it again, I’ll definitely fix it up.

I think it looks really good on you, I especially like the back!

I like how it fits so well without visible darts. And the fabric is delicious, i love it, :)
