This is my entry for the Bernina ‘Party through the decades’ competition.
The first decade of the 1900’s was a very progressive time. The Art world experienced the colourful Fauvist movement, Art Nouveau was at it’s peak in Architecture and Design, Music was exploding into Ragtime/Jazz and Woman’s fashion was liberated by Paul Poiret. I tried to capture this sense of freedom of expression in my dress.
It was a time of fashion revolution! Rigid corsets, big petticoats and demure pastel colours were ditched in favour of a flowing, colourful and altogether more modern look. Paul Poiret, hailed as the king of fashion, made tube sheath dresses, often out of single rectangles of fabric in vibrant colours. He had far flung influences including the traditional Greek method of draping clothes and Orientalism with it’s bat-wing sleeves, beaded slippers and embellishments. The jewellery that I made to go with this dress mimics the beaded look of some of Poirets dresses and I have teamed the dress with a pair of beaded Green Khussa slippers.
I have used silk dupion, silk habotai and silk satin crepe. Quite a departure for me compared to the fabrics I usually work with. It gave me a massive sense of achievement when I managed all of those corners! The colours in my dress are inspired by the paintings of the Fauvist movement, especially Luxembourg Gardens (1901-1902) by Henri Matisse. This is the first time I have done colour blocking and I loved it. I also found Georges Lepapes illustrations inspirational. I got really inspired by the research that I did into the aesthetics of the time and I feel like I could design a whole collection based on this decade.
Massive thanks to my marvellous model Sally.

really beautiful! your inspiration translates very clearly and is spot-on. I agree that this would be super badass with a turban a-la Poiret!
