This past weekend i had a wedding to go to, but since I (a) am a plus size girl (b) plus size dresses make you look like a tent with boobs © decided to not buy any clothes, instead i will make it…i decided to well…make my dress.
Originally it was going to be a Butterrick 1953 pattern. but when i made half the dress and put it on..well, i looked like a nun.
SO i said no. i need to make a new dress.
Wednesday night took out the black cotton sateen and started on a new dress.
This dress is a combination of 3 different patterns ( i will update this entry with the pattern numbers later on today)
The bottom, front bodice and back bodice. all different. But I re-drafted them to fit me perfectly.
Since i wasnt planning on a whole new dress, i forgot i needed a 14in black zipper. i only had a green one. and with the time ticking i made it work and sewed an invisible zipper. But i will change it to black later on.
the front bodice and pockets are lined with silk.
this dress was the most comfortable dress i have ever worn. it fit me just right and it didnt make me look like the awkwardly dress big girl in the room.
I was originally planning to make a jacket, but i decided on a cardigan instead.
The wedding was at 4pm, and i finished the dress at 230.
in total it was 10 hours of work

i used the bottom half is vogue pattern 1074 Donna Karan New York.
the top half is made up of two vintage patterns BUT you can use burdastyle #6046 without the sleeves and collar for a similar effect.
ALSO if you use the kristen (burdastyle) pattern, in order to achive the proper look, you have to add another set of darts in the front and one set in the back
i often find myself mixing and matching old and new patterns as well as making vintage ones bigger etc.
also, not sure if any of you go here, but i buy all my name brand patterns (lol) from sewingpatterns.com
sometimes they have great sales like 8 bucks for vogue patterns that normally cost up to 20 bucks.

OMG your dress is exactly what I have been looking for!! You look gorgeous!
I am going to a “gold party” and am in the same predicament as you were, all the patterns were frumpy and all the nice ones were not for plus size ladies.
When would you able to put up the pattern info as I have only just over a week to make it (with the help of others as I am a complete novice)! :D

I agree, that dress is amazing and such a great silhouette! I am definitely using this as a source of inspiration for my upcoming LBD… is that a circle skirt or a really full a-line??
Fabulous.

i will post the 3 patterns. but you are so right.
Plus Size fashion does not always show off ones best feature.
and its sad.
im not 80, so wearing muu muus are not going to work, never mind the fact that my 42ddd make me look like im prego all year round..lol
i think when it comes to sewing your own garments, know what you want to show off and what you want to hide.
also, picking the right fabric is key.
i stay away from clingy textiles , i prefer something with more structure for a more streamlined look

I like it! :) you are right about the ‘big tent with boobs’ thing, it’s like they want to hide who is different from the standard.. you looks amazing in your dress, it’s very flattering and i’d like to know which pattens you merged to do this :) It’s a very good job!

Thank you guys soo much!
as a plus size girl, i find it hard to find a dress (store bought) that will accommodate me.
either the darts are in the wrong spot, or the waist is too low…
Im not a huge fan of showing my arms but cap sleeves arent always the best look for a bigger girl.
im a huge fan of cardigans because you can dress them up or down
I was truly so comfortable in my dress. i didnt even want to take it off.

It looks great! The bust darts are perfect. I’m really loving the cardigan look, too…. I have a cardigan in just this color, and I’m feeling inspired now to wear it with a black dress!
