I have also made these shorts from the downloaded pattern. I found the instructions really hard to understand. I used Pattern Runway’s tutorial on welt pockets and Sigrid’s instructions in how to insert a fly front zipper (See links below). http://www.patternrunway.com/2011/09/how-to-sew-single-welt-pocket-with.html http://sigridsewingprojects.blogspot.com/2007/09/fly-front-zipper-how-to-make-it.html Apart from that I used common sense and looking at pairs of similar shorts I own to construct the shorts. I did increase the underlap width showing and therefore redraft the waistband piece to fit. They ended up looking pretty much exactly like the photo and fit really well. I’m very pleased with them but I wouldn’t tackle them if I was a beginner.

I made these shorts and I’m happy with the result. ( I did increase the inseam depth though, otherwise fit was okay). The shorts are a slightly low rise fit, which was good for me. The caveat: clarity of instructions. I could make no sense of the lap zipper instructions. I ended up using a commercial pair of shorts as a guide. Waistband instructions were also fairly incomprehensible. Also, I ended up using alternative instructions from a prior issue to create the welt pockets. If you know what you are doing—or have confidence that you can figure it out—then the pattern should be fine. Otherwise beware. I hope that the instructions in the download version are better than the magazine instructions were.
