Description

Our sofa originally came with cushions in different colors that were no longer working with our interior design. Most beginning sewing projects are pillow cases and such, so for my first sewing project I did a new set of covers for the five sofa cushions.

I used KnollTextiles “Knoll Felt” in Tar, Smoke, and Grey. I liked the fabric for it’s textural softness and color, and after a lot of experimentation, found it easy to work with with its architectural quality.

Using the existing covers as a pattern/template, I used a simple zig zag stitch on the reverse/inside. I used a rotary cutter to ensure crisp lines and a simple single stitch for the ‘fronts’ of the pillows. I did a few of the cushions with contrasting colors on the back and a few with the same dominant color on the back.

The cushions are 24" square. I explored a few different methods of closure but found a simple stitch a third of the way on the left and right side of the opening was sufficient. Reusing the existing fill, it is easy to insert and remove into the covers.

With inspiration from modern architecture, the pillow designs employ a modernist grid that allow them to to be used and appreciated as tactile sculpture on their own alone, as an ordered grouping, or as the sculptural, free-form mass that occurs after using them.
