I live in Florida where EVERY day is summer! So I chose a palm-leaf printed fabric for this dress because it is seasonless: the colors and design blend into Summer as well as they will in the Fall, Winter and Spring (which around here is all one season!)
This was my first attempt at a downloadable Burda pattern. I chose Cate #7983 because I love the ruched bodice, the empire waistline, and the ample shoulder straps that can also be worn as a capped sleeve. I took a chance choosing an “advanced” level pattern, but I enjoy a challenge…and it was! So different from the patterns I have bought and used all my life, this project made me think deeply about structure, and I was able to use my acquired knowledge of clothing construction to alter the instructions just a little to make it work for ME!
I love this dress design, and I’m very pleased with how it turned out. I plan to make it again, in a fancier fabric as the pattern suggests. For this challenge, though, I chose rayon because it drapes nicely and is cool enough to wear in our subtropical climate. I’m wearing it as I write this! It’s so comfortable, and the silhouette is flattering for any age.
Thanks, BurdaStyle! You have prompted me beyond my comfort zone and helped me create a beautiful, wearable garment!
Rayon fabric, and my first attempt at boning and an invisible zipper!
