Same here. not too many men in the US sew either and it’s looked on as kind of strange. I don’t tell too many, but as my family is all from Russia, it was more normal there so none of them see it as strange. … And if you so desire, by all means, make a pleated skirt!!! :) I’m glad you like the one I had made. I made it a long time ago for her. so I would do some things differently now, but it still turned out good and she still wears it to this day!

Actually I put the wrong side of the upper part on top of the right side of the lower part (overlapped them about 2-3 cm) when sewing it. I hope that makes sense! :)
