Thanks! I never heard of Haberman’s before, but then I have been in MI only since 2003 and was hardly interested in sewing until last year. :-) I will definitely need to ask my honey to drive me there (I don’t drive myself yet, sadly) and I will also see if they have a website.
It’s funny you say “neck of the woods”, living so close to Lansing and other big cities here (although having been to most of them and comparing them to my home city, I can understand – sort of – what you mean :-)). Believe me, you are still better off than we are up here in the North! :-) Apart from Joann’s (and it still takes me 40-50 minutes by car to get to the closest one) and Walmart, there are only more or less smaller stores and their prices… ummmm… are not kind… ;-)
I’ve been to Field’s Fabrics once in Kalamazoo and I bought this wonderful black cotton with sort of raspberry lines “drizzled” all over it (if I remember correctly – it has been a while and it’s been in the drawer since the purchase, since it was originally meant for my sister, who refused to have anything made out of it – “Ugh! I don’t wear pink!” – and I still haven’t figured out what exactly I want to do with it for myself ;-))
Anyway, thanks again for the advice!!!!

regarding the cowl neck top, the thing with the twin needle is that it won’t work properly on jersey because the seam won’t stretch, it’d look good, though…

How come that you came up with a 50 cents per yard silk? Congrats! I’d buy a mile of it!
Oct 11, 2009, 11.22 PMby oscarthegrouch108
it was my luck day at JoAnns. this silk has been kicking around the store forever, in the clearance bin for as long, finally marked down to a buck to get it to move, and the clearance stuff was 1/2 off to boot. i got 8 yards :)

Aaah, I’m a size 14 (vintage sizing). My chest is 32.7 inches so I figure 32 inches (sz 14) is closer than 34 (sz 16). I’d love to take a look at your patterns :-)!

I’m pleased that you think so, and you are very welcome. The Costumes.org site is falling apart as no-one is updating it. Dr. Maginnis is semiretired and has moved on to warmer climates (she was originally posting and teaching in Fairbanks, AK ) I’m downloading what I can, but have used up over 8GB this month. I’m about to switch to a thumb drive. Enjoy, and if you need anything from the old site, ask. If I have it, you have it. Cordially, Nehmah

Thank you for your comment on my creation! And good luck with your wedding dress project. It seems like a lot of hard work…but it will definitely be worth it!

Can’t wait to see your creation with use of a tie/trouser upcycle! :)
Jun 6, 2009, 12.25 AMby sewella
Yes – I think that would be interesting – though I have the feeling that the black strips would be more appealing. Anyway it doesn’t hurt to try both fabrics. I’ll send you a note when I finally finish it. Anajan has sent me a great link for frog closures where you actually embroider the strips of fabric. (I knew of a pattern where you knot it). However I am finishing another dress and a bubble top today so I’ll take up the closure later next week. It was good hearing from you again. Be in touch. xx

Thank you for your compliments on my wedding dress! I look forward to seeing your red dress! How fun!! When are you getting married?

Hi! Thank you on the lovely, lovely comment on my dress! Yes, I thought of the frog closure and now I am certain it will look appropriate on it – as a matter of fact I know of a Burda member who offered the site with the how to of a frog closure but at the time of making the dress I didn’t have time to search for her / or the internet for help. Thank you a ton!

Thank you very much for your nice comment on my Regency dress. At the moment I do not plan any events, but who knows what the future will bring.

Thank you for commenting on my Trouser Dress! I love upcycling old things into something fun and new! These trousers were headed for the trash before I decided to try to do something with them. :)

I have noticed that cottons seem to shrink quite a bit! Especially woven cottons, but the other fabric families are less picky. I pre-washed my denim and still haven’t had time to devote to making pants, but the fabric had a different texture and was less stiff! I appreciate your help with knowing how to care for fabric! Can I ask you another question about fabric care?? :) …would you have any suggestions on how to avoid pilling/balling with knits? I have made a few t-shirts and they seem to have this happen after a few washes. I would appreciate any suggestions! :) Thanks again!

Thank you for your post on my denim question! :) I appreciate the advice and have another question for you, do you pre-wash all of your fabrics before sewing? I haven’t really done it in the past but I am beginning to think it may be a good idea…! Thanks again for the advice!

sorry oscarthegrouch, the Bella high waisted were never free & i didn’t purchase them so i can’t send them to you:( i’m sure if you ask nicely someone will send them on to you… i don’t even have anything resembling them that i could send to you! what if you used the pattern for the shorts with the buttons up the sides & lengthen the legs? they look like they have a high waist, or you could add a bit of length to the body? lyndi*
