Hey Toni, what’s up with the dress? If it makes you feel any better, I made Clare a top today, my sixth using the same pattern and this time I stuffed up big time:( Thought I did a good job rectifying the problems, but she’s not a happy girl…aaaaagh!

It’s a long whinge on consecutive errors. I’ll outline it all on my blog when I post. I’m hoping to finish the muslin (yup, still on the muslin!) today and will post it on TMS shortly. It’s actually funny, all the errors, when I look back, but it’s quite frustrating to work through.
Thanks for the empathy. You’re so much better at sewing than me, so it’s both comforting and depressing (LOL) to know that mistakes will continue into experthood. :)

Hi Toni, how are you going with your vintage project? I woke this morning after dreaming through a problem, (the instructions are not very clear), now feeling inspired :) I’m about half way through, it is a very fiddly project and, because I’m working in silk, I’m going slowly and steadily. I am thinking of buying the Anda pattern for next month’s dress challenge, it looks easy and straightforward and a girl here on Burdastyle made a lovely linen version that I would be very happy to copy! Life is hectic here, a wedding in two weeks and nephews arriving from the Netherlands soon after, it’s spring and the garden is going MAD…lots of work all round.

Hey Jen, sounds like we’re mirroring. :)
My life is nuts, I’m holding down 3 positions at the office while they try to replace staff, so I’m just too tired to sew in the evenings, and weekends are spent catching up on housework and other stuff.
I’m about halfway through my apron – finally got my sewing machine limping along (not helped by power failures and brownouts), just finished the skirt ruffles, now to do the waistband and ties.
I’ve been researching Halloween costumes, thinking I’ll make it a Frightful Frocktober. :)
Your project sounds wonderful, I can’t wait to see it!

LOL Busted!. According to my Sew Retro book, and subsequent googling, the quintessential 50s attire (preferably in polka dots) was an enormous full circle skirt/dress (7 yards of fabric) with crinolines… and an apron. :)

I have a 3-tier ruffle retro apron pattern and the required yardage of polka-dot fabric to make it. Darn thing is poofy I tell ya!

If nothing else, it’ll make a great Halloween costume paired with a skirt and button-down blouse. Ooh.. and curlers! Hahahahahaha

Bra pattern? OMG, what a brilliant idea!

I’ve actually spent hours poring over old patterns, and dithering about what I want, because I’m not keen to add to my wardrobe something I’ll likely only wear for the photos! Then they posted the Retro Blouse here and I stumbled across the perfect fabric while I was hunting for a lining for my cape.

I’ve seen a few comments that it’s not really a vintage pattern, but it’s a modern take on a vintage pattern, and I’ll probably get a lot of use out of it. If I can make it work.

I did seriously consider a 1950s full skirt dress complete with crinolene, though! O.O

OMG, I just did the same thing :( I think that button needs to be moved. I was sorry to read about your Father Toni, I went through that three years ago, it is just so surreal when a parent dies. Even though we are adults, it is a huge shock when our parents grow older and ill, my Dad had leukaemia and died three weeks after it was diagnosed, we were all on autopilot for a long time during and after…so many regrets. The Peppermint one is the freebie that the three girls running the blog used, they have linked to it from their blog page. Peppermint Magazine is Australian and very pretty, but expensive and not much substance, but their website has a few nice free patterns including the capelet. Time for me to notify the Moderator !

Thanks. Yeah, it’s hard to comprehend that he’s gone. It doesn’t feel right at all.

I looked up the Peppermint and I found the Crazy Gypsy blog and had a look at all the capes she suggested. I still think I’m going to try draft my own. Just for kicks. :)

I’ll look out for yours. Race you?

We planned to go shopping, but we ended up doing so many fun things it didn’t happen. Only 4 days, with so much to do and see. I did get to the Paul Simon concert though, on my birthday. It was fantabulous!

What have you written, fiction or non-fiction? I have toyed with writing short stories for the Young Adult market, but there is so much of the structure that needs adhering to for it to be acceptable, I have a tendency to leave things hanging! Who is your publisher? Hope it all goes well, keep me posted :)

It must be disheartening living somewhere that corruption is endemic, still for you at least it’s not for the rest of your life! Are you going home for Christmas?

No, unfortunately not. We’re here until end of January because my husband’s “stand in” went home for Christmas. As one of them has to be here at all times in case of emergency, we’re stucked. :(

Still, it could be worse. It could be raining. :)

“My name is Toni and I’m an addict”, ha ha, made me laugh; my name is Jenn and I’m one too! Maybe we can formulate a 12 step programme for recovering sewists…trouble is, I’d rather be sewing than almost anything else :) Truth be told, I’m pretty ordinary talent-wise, much the same as my recorder playing, I just love doing it.,

The only problem is that most sewists wouldn’t join the program, because they don’t want to recover! We’re like gamblers, we believe if we just keep on going, we’ll eventually hit the “big win”. LOL

Yeah, my interests far outweight my ability to do any of them. Having ADHD doesn’t help either!

Some thoughts about the Danielle…..I am quite short and thought the dress was too long, mistake! I should have gone with the longer length! Should have brought up the shoulders before adding the sleeves. Should have raised the neckline a tad as it looks like I have a very matronly bosom and finally, I should have brought the neckline in at the sides a tad, as the shoulders keep slipping down and showing bra straps. These are all modifications I will do in the future. You live in Port Moresby? Hot up there methinks! Where are you from originally? I had a friend who went up there years ago and I never heard from her again!!! Good luck with the sewing :)

Thanks for that, I’ll look up this comment before I try to sew my next Danielle in a knit. I don’t see any of the faults in your photos, but photos do tend to hide some (which is nice, of course!)
Yes, we’re posted here for a couple years, before we head home to Texas. Hot, yes, but then, so’s Texas.
It’s been a chaotic year, so I’ve had very little time to sew. We’re going on Home Leave at the end of this month, and I’m hoping things will settle down so that I can get back to some stitch-witchery. :)
