Hi Malissa,
I have posed this in the help section but I wanted to personally post it with you to be sure that you would receive this. I have also sent this to 2 others sewers as well who are also quite talented. I hope that you can help me.
I have a last minute job making 3 ballet costumes due Sept.9. The construction is not a problem. The problem is one of fabric for 2 of the costumes.
The client wants the woman’s costume to be a sleeveless leotard with a silk chiffon and silk crepe de chine skirt. The man will be in tights and a silk shirt. Here is where the problem starts. She wants the costumes to go gradually from white to green. The original designer,( moved and couldn’t finish the project) had planned on dyeing the white silks to achieve this effect.
I have never had any need to dye fabric other than tie dye tee shirts and certainly not graduated. So the first question is have you ever died silk and if so is it hard to do? Also, do you have any sources for dyes, materials and how to information? The original designer has specked Dharma Trading Co. for dyes and materials. Have you ever used them and would you recommend them? I also need tips on how to do graduated dying and how to achieve this effect.
I am also looking at costume companies and fabrics on line to possibly purchase these 2 costumes or the fabric for them. Do you know of any companies that would have something like this? I have resources of my own but am not seeing what I need from them.
All companies would need to be in the US since I have a tight budget as well as a tight time frame.
Thank you in advance for any information or help you can give me.
Becky

hi just wanted to let you know that i have done a little research after talking to you about the scalloped edges and have found out what you meant about needing to ‘face’ a scalloped edge. thanks for all of your help, your a gem :)
Jul 5, 2010, 04.09 AMby Kelsey Edwards
is there any stitch i could do that i would not have to face, you mean like interfacing right?
Jul 5, 2010, 04.08 AMby Kelsey Edwards

hi, in regards to your advice on my ‘blanket stitch’ discussion page, i was wondering if you could help me further. i was planning to do the blanket stitch on a garment with scalloped edging, i was wondering if you knew how to hem this, if it is hemable :)

You would actually have to face a scalloped edge and on that type of edge even quilt cotton would frey if left unfinished. How deep are the scallops?

I saw your explanation of the teflon sheet thing in regards to the scrap thread technique, and I took a look at the links as well. Nifty! I had no idea such a thing was possible but it seems right up my alley:)

My goodness! You found the elusive sliders! That is the style and size variation I was hoping for. I’ve been out of town over the week-end, and found something there that sort of worked (they look more like belt buckles). I’ve already put the ties together using what I bought over the week-end. But I’m so delighted you found a source for exactly what I was looking for. Those slides are wide enough to accommodate thicker fabrics, which is what I need. And I do plan to continue making bow ties for gifts and for future donations. Thanks so much!!!!!!!

Thanks so much for responding to my call for sliders:) Yes, I have tried bra strap sliders, which I purchased online. But I’ve been unable to find them as large as I need. The pattern calls for 7/8″ × 1/2" and the largest I’ve found were 3/4 inch. But they just didn’t do the trick. Anyway, thanks again for the link. I’ll keep it for future reference.

Hello. I am trying to find out what size dress form to purchase for home. How do I pick the size to buy? You had commented on another post on this subject, but I didn’t an answer relating to size.
