Hey, sorry I didn’t see your msg from last month. I am a vintage fan too, I am in desperate need to learn victory rolls and Dita-like hair styles. How how how?!

Hope that you are feeling better ! Take care ! I think I am suffering from delayed shock after the death of my husband in December !! As I have been feeling so low. But I must rally myself !! I shall start a new project ! Many friends have joined me in making a community quilt for a Christmas display and subsequently to raffle for a local charity — so that will get me going.

Husbands Eh ??!! I fitted on a tissue pattern for a coat and pinned it to my front and told mine that the large spot on the back should be on my spine — so he held in place and said I needed 2" all the way down. Now it’s an older pattern anyway and being panelled I added 1/4" onto seams BUT decided to try it out as a 3/4 coat in cheaper fabric — Am I glad I did — it’s way too big on the bust !! I thought it peculiar at the time as I am a size 12 on top and 14 below — So I have to leave the hips and take in all up to the bust !! MEN ! Still he did do the vacuuming this morning and I leave so many threads about !!

Hello again, I just discovered TWO other fabric shops in Blackpool. Well I found one ( a good excuse for another trip into town ). It was like Aladdins cave !! Rolls of fabric piled up and rolls going up the stairs — and outside !! Loved it ! got fabric to make 50’s retro outfit for next summer. I often obtain fabrics from Charity shops and Oxfam here sells Eastern/ Asian wear and often I acquire Sari bits or shawls. Wash the fabric and reuse. Is there an Asian community there as their fabric shops are a wonder ! ?

Skirt is great – it’s such a long time since I made a straight skirt as we dance a lot and therefore full skirts are easier. Today I started a waistcoat to go with it — when finished I shall post them in my projects. But best of all was the fact that it has cost so little. the woollen dog-tooth check for the skirt was a remnant from Oxfam ( some years ago ) for 59p. I always have a stock of petersham, zips, hooks etc and the lining was recycled from an old skirt. The waistcoat fabric is polyester crepe and a generous 1M remnant costing £2 ( it is self-lined so uses all the fabric with some clever cutting out ! ). I got 6 buttons for 56p — oh and I had iron-on interfacing already. Then in the market yesterday i got a cream coloured jumper ( to wear beneath ) for £2.99 !!!! What makes it worthwhile is the satisfaction of such a cheap outfit — what dressmaking used to be about many years ago !!

Sadly Scarborough isn’t renowned for it’s cheap fabric. I am working on a version of the Coffee Date dress with a circle skirt. Or at least I will be when I am back . It’s a bit difficult in our house due to the huge amount of animals that are absolutely desperate to help and/or supervise sewing.

I live near Blackpool so cannot join you – but see my projects esp Rock n Roll — my skirt( need to click on to see all projects ). I can provide details of how to make this simple skirt. We love to go to 40’s events – but not many here any more - more your way. See this site: http://www.gi-jive.co.uk/ also a site titled 40’s links. Give ideas here for dressing and hairstyles. On E bay you may locate vintage or retro patterns. On this site I saw a project entitled walk-away dress ( I think ) about 2 weeks ago — was 50’s reprint of a Butterick pattern — a simple design. I have just made a pencil skirt ( made a pattern out of newspaper. Look in charity shops for patterns too. Best of luck !!
