I am excited for your Retro Bombshell class project. You will graduate Magna Cum Laude! The course will be getting attention, thanks to you. Fun to think about at my end-enjoy!

How nice, thank you! :-) You can see my progress so far here:

I am totally in marathon mode with this dress – working on it 5 days straight morning till night! Enjoying every minute but kind of stressed because it is for a wedding on Sunday. I’m meeting my BF’s family for the first time at this wedding! So I think I’m far ahead of other people in the course and I feel a bit lonely that way! :-) I wish other people were also working on it now so we could help each other. I also feel bad for asking so many questions!
Anyway it is an AMAZING course – I am learning SO much!

Hi Keren, how are you? It’s true that I haven’t seen any of your projects here lately… why are you not sewing? You’re so great at it? How’s the cat? :-) I liked your cat on the photos. Hope you are well and I hope to see your stuff here soon. I have been sewing a lot, but I don’t always get the time to upload my stuff here anymore.
Take care. Suzy xx

Hi Suzy,
I saw your message only now! I can’t really say why I haven’t been sewing. I just stopped a few months ago! I want to get back though. Need to organize my sewing room because it is a mess. Then I have to maybe use fabric I have instead of buying more… I planned to sew a pair of trousers but I’ve gained a few pounds so I’d rather sew dresses now instead. Also I’ve become picky with patterns – stuff in the Burda magazines I have just doesn’t seem to cut it. I saw a few good patterns online but they are quite expensive especially due to shipping. Oh, and I need to take my sewing machine in for maintenance and the serger is acting up with jersey – also need to haul it to the shop. So basically these are all excuses… I hope to get back on track soon. Thanks for writing! Hope you are well. My cats are also well – they moved out to the country to live with my parents and they are much happier there in the sunshine and freedom. I see them whenever I visit. My mother pampers them and brushes their fur every day and they get treated like little princes.

The “wow” red dress & projects are motivating. You are generous with tutorial advice which is terrific . I think, in addition to your ceramics, you deserve a spot in Burda Magazine! They have to love your promotion & demonstration of just how well their product serves. Thank you. for the blogspot – it is helpful & energizing.

Wow, thank you so much!!! You made my day :) I do love sewing so much and I love creating stuff in general. I work full time in computers so I feel I am only skimming the surface in terms of getting to where I want to be with my creations.. Thanks for saying that I am a pro! I feel that I’ve gotten some experience but there’s so much more for me to learn!

Hidden buttons! You are a smart lady and now it makes more sense!! I will let you know how it goes. I will avoid sewing tonight or during the week- I get really tired and make mistakes which just me ratty and annoyed. Thankyou so much- you are a star!
=) I was wondering why the whole front should be cut when there were so few buttons. It is always the obvious…
Thanks again!!
=))

Any help!! Wonderful!! It is the March issue and number 124- blouse with the pleated inset. I think I undrstood it a bit- I can get the stitching the button bands bit, and the folding length wise and sewing top… and now begining to get lost… hum. I think I had it a bit better understood half an hour a go. Rats! I just need some pins and I am sure I can get it!
How fantastic- you get to go to Madrid! Bit of a long flight? Those always make me ratty. What is it you do, then? The only presentations I give are to 3 year olds. I am a fine artist but I work in a bilingual kindergarten. I live in Berlin, Germany and come from Scotland. I like it here! I do sometimes wish I could get an art based job with grown-ups and not so much finger painting and potato printing!! But its fun and rewarding.
I discoverd sewing a few years back and now kick myself I didn’t study textiles… I just loved printing too much when I was at university. I am looking to see if I can do some courses here but I think I might be lost- technical sewing German! Eeek!
Buttons are fine- you can make those nifty little button loops and no cutting required!

There is a kick ass book I highly suggest you look into getting- its called ‘Design it yourself clothes’ by Cal patch. She shows your how to make patterns yourself from your body measurements—- I really like it but I want to sew some more pre-made patterns before I get really digging in it. I want to cheat- find a few patterns that are good and then blow them apart with the help of the book…. Look into it!!
I am making a shirt from this months burda magazine- there is this cute shirt and I have made it so far and now I am completely stuck!! I don’t understand or see how to put on the button hole plaquet. I can see somehow its really logically easy but I can’t figure it out!!! So I have to scrape about the web looking for how to’s…. or maybe this site can help. I feel so stupid!!! It was going so nicely too! I folded all the pleats- took forever.. sewed them… and now. Hmmm. Hmmm. The instructions are sometimes VERY basic!
Zips are not my cup of tea. I hate them!! I made a skirt and lost my temper and put buttons on instead. looks great! Doesn’t work with trousers….
Let me know how it is going!!

Hey! It’s great to hear from you :-) though sorry to hear you are struggling. Are you looking at burda magazine of Feb or March? Tell me which pattern you’re doing and I’d love to try to help you with the button hole plaquet.
I don’t hate zips :-) I was taught how to make them in a very methodical way, so I am OK with them. I have yet to make an invisible zip, though! I am scared of buttons because once you cut the hole, that’s it! It’s cut! And what if it’s in the wrong place?
I bought 3 books from amazon yesterday – 2 about sewing soft toys and one about pattern making:
http://www.amazon.com/Bean-Bag-Buddies-Nicki-Wheeler/dp/0715327607/ref=pd_ys_iyr1
http://www.amazon.com/Sew-Me-Love-Stuffed-Friends/dp/1596681829/ref=pd_ys_iyr3
http://www.amazon.com/Metric-Pattern-Cutting-Womens-Wear/dp/1405175672/ref=pd_ys_iyr2
I’ll look at this book you recommended – sounds very interesting. I’m also reading this book that Josefina from this site recommended – The Easy Guide to Sewing Pants. It’s great. I want to follow it but I need to find a buddy to measure me :-) There are other books in the series about shirts etc. but I’m sticking with the pants one for now.
Otherwise I am stressed about work – flying to Madrid this Saturday for 5 days, going to customers. Scary! And I’m not prepared! And my manager wants ME to give the presentations! I would love to sew and sew and sew but I can’t. Gotta work. :-(
Talk to you soon!
Keren

That was so very kind of you to pass on this site to me!! Thankyou so much- Going to check it out! I don’t normally have problems with skirts.. they can be a little small and sit higher, or looser and sit on hips- not the plan but it works… however trousers I think would be a cow!! I saw a couple of great designs for trousers in the last Burda magazine- what style are you sewing?? I hate trousers… I buy them and always have to take up METERS of leg!! Germans are far too bloody tall! =) Plucking up courage to sew a shirt… hoping that the underarms wont be too tight- and the arms either- thats one of my problems…. hmm!! Will let you know how it goes!
Thanks again!! =)

Thanks for all the tips. It is so annoying when you measure out a size and somehow through seams and some mishap I am sure on my side it comes out wrong!! I made a 38 top- managed to reduce it logically (following the reductions from 40- 38- they always have that in normal patterns) and the darn pattern was still too big!! But better too big than too small—- that would be beyond annoying!
I am a bit scared to make dresses for that reason- I suppose take the bull by the horns and all that!
Thanks again… will give it a shot!
Feb 23, 2010, 09.12 PMby keren
No problem :-) don’t blame yourself for the sizing differences! I think they (the pattern creators) make the sizes “too big” because they don’t think the garment should sit too tight or because they don’t want you to sew according to your size and then complain that it came out too small. That’s why I think the size 38 worked for me though it supposedly shouldn’t.
Another thing is that if the fabric is stretchy, you need to use a smaller size. Otherwise it’ll hang looser than if it were a non-stretch fabric.
I agree with you that it is SO annoying to spend hours like some professor trying to fix the pattern according to size, then trying it on when it’s done and seeing that it’s all wrong! That’s why I just gave up and sew it as is according to what seems like a good idea at the time and then fix it in the end. It works in most cases. Though I’m not THAT experienced… Maybe people who know what they’re doing have a magic method.
hoping they’ll tell us one day what it is :)

Hi Keren! Thanks :-) there are a few tutorials in my blog that might be helpful. The internet is such a great source of information! Summer should be over in a month or so over here – we are all looking forward to it, though indeed you are right about the projects (light summer dresses) being more fun! Good luck with future projects and do email me if there’s any sewing dilemma I might be able to help out with :-)
