katexxxxxx commented on the forum topic sewing machine!

Many newer machines have sintered or teflon bearings and do not need oiling by the user. Be wary of oiling if the manual does not tell you to do so, especially on an electronic machine. Excess oi…

katexxxxxx commented on the forum topic What Adjustable Body Form Mannaquin would u recommend?

I’d strongly recommend the Adjustoform range. http://adjustoform.com/ Lady Valet and Supafit are both part of their range, so will do well. I’d recommend an 8 part form so you can adjust top and…

katexxxxxx commented on the forum topic sewing machine!

A lot of those cheap entry level machines don’t get oiled by the user: they only get oiled at major servicing. Check with the manual to see if it should be oiled.

katexxxxxx commented on the forum topic the collarless coat conundrum

Why not make a separate ‘false’ collar? Make one in lovely faux fur, on a fabric flange that you could button to the inside of the coat, like the reverse of a button-on removable hood that usually…

katexxxxxx commented on the forum topic Military(?) greatcoat

Very likely. I have my father’s last No ! RAF uniform (circa 1976), made by Gieves & Hawkes of 1 Saville Row. There are features on this that you never see in a lounge suit of the same era, and t…

katexxxxxx commented on the forum topic Lace wedding dress pattern advice?

Totally this! And make it in something that is close to the drape of your lace, like cheap lace curtain! if you make it in calico/muslin, it won’t drape or fit the same way as the final garment.

katexxxxxx commented on the forum topic Do I Need an Overlocker?

The major problem I find with the so-called overlocker stitches on a regular machine is that they are thread-hungry and make the seam stiff. They also show on the outside a lot more than serger/ov…

katexxxxxx commented on the forum topic Your Favorite Jacket Lining?

There is no point at all in buying lovely fabric (HOWEVER much or little you pay for it!) if you then wreck the project with nasty lining!

I don’t bother with laying the fabric on muslin/calico: w…

katexxxxxx commented on the forum topic resizing armhole confusion

You need to make sure that the armscye you have after fitting the body of the jacket is plenty large enough. Mark on your toile where the new seam line round the armscye needs to be.

That would be easier to drape on the stand than to try and find a pattern. You probably need to start with a foundation with a boned top and a short pencil skirt, and drape the outer layer to get …
