sounds like your bottom tension is now too loose. tighten the needle in the machine, and then tighten the thread tension for the bobbin by moving the dial to a higher number and test each level on a scrap piece of 2 layer cotton fabric. If all else fails, add new spool of thread, new bobbin with new thread, clean out the bobbin case and throat plate section (under throat plate) with a dust brush (should come with all machines for clean up/repairs), pull out any extra threads found under the throat plate, add a new sewing machine needle, try again on a folded over piece of cotton (2 layers). Then rethread the entire machine all over again, and recheck your top and bottom sewing on both sides. If top and bottom still does not look right, walk away from it for a couple hours, or even 24 hours (I’m speaking from nightmares from years past here) and then come back and do the same steps above all over again. If this does not work, take it to a trustworthy sewing machine repair shop. Hope this helps. I had trouble getting this message on the questions site. Please let me know how this works for you. Thanks for your message, 20beverly08. I’ve been working on this for a couple of days and have been through the whole routine ; ) More of a mystery than nightmare fortunately! I’m sure there’s no problem with the machine, just a difficult combination of fabric and thread more than anything. Oh well, at least I learned some new things! Take care.

    Hi Jen,

What a treasure to get a box of your Grandmothers sewing items. Luckily it came to you rather than just being tossed out.

I have my Great grandmothers treadle sewing machine Circ. 1890’s. It has all the attachments and instruction manuals. I also have an old skirt pattern of hers from the 1890’s as well. It gives me such joy to look at them and use them.

    Hi Jenss-1,

Your avatar has always caught my eye. I’ve been trying to figure out where/what it is. I finally found it!

This past week I was visiting my mother in law and was cleaning out her sewing supplies. (Her sewing area was in the basement and she had some water damage there over the past couple of months). In her pile of notions I ran across a packet of needles with your avatar picture on the cover. Her packet is called Sewing Susan. I noticed that your packet has Vogue on the cover.

    How cool is this! bjr99

      Hi bjr99,
Yes, this was a “Vogue” brand package of needles. I guess they were sold under different names then? After my grandmother died I was sent her old sewing box. She saved everything, and the needle pack was one of the “vintage” items in the box. It’s funny because I just saw that Debbie of the Stitches and Seams blog was giving away a similar package of Vogue needles last week.
      Thanks for your message!

The pillow is really cute. It reminds me of the 1970s—but better!
