Thanks; consensus definitely seems to be that you leave the edges raw inside the facing.

I tried pulling the binding patch through both layers of fabric and folding in the ends as described above …

harrietbazley commented on the forum topic Average Skirt Length for High Waisted Skirt

Can’t possibly tell you the average – mine (5’ 4") would be 24" to just below the knee-cap, though I usually wear them at 26"-27" for calf-length coverage.

harrietbazley commented on the project High-waisted 1940s skirt

The great thing about the high waisted style is that you get that lovely long line on the skirt despite the fact that it’s actually only mid-calf – I’ve got a naturally high waist so those 30s jump…

harrietbazley commented on the article Make it Yours: The Button Up Shirt

I never wear T-shirts because they don’t have buttons in front :)

I like my dresses to button up too; other people start drolling over low-cut vintage party dresses but I’m busy coveting the dow…

Nicely styled (a dress! with buttons! and sleeves!) – this is the sort of thing I look out for in charity shops, no ‘vintage’ but just flattering.

A pity black never photographs well :(

harrietbazley commented on the forum topic PDF Patterns

The easy way (for a given value of ‘easy’) to make a PDF pattern is to draw it out on paper, divide the paper into A4-sized rectangles and scan it in one sheet at a time, then simply create a PDF c…

This was actually the first jumper I ever made out of the “Stitch in Time” book, and in fact the first knitting I’d done for about fifteen years; as ever, I was trying to run before I could walk.

I think I’ve worn it three times so far, all happy occasions; the trouble is it’s so memorable that you can’t really get away with appearing twice in it at the same venue!

harrietbazley commented on the project The Fifties finish

Thank you; I’m a hand-knitter, so I’m used to projects that take months!

The worst thing about hand sewing is that it’s so difficult to unpick when you make a mistake, compared to a machined seam …

I’m afraid I didn’t make this gorgeous dress myself – someone else did that before I was born; but I did put an awful lot of work into it!

This was an impulse purchase from a ‘vintage’ shop – "…

“Blogger: page not found” – I think you need to lose the final slash off the scalloped waistband URL (or maybe it’s just my browser that’s fussy….) I agree it looks better at a longer length tha…

Am I right in thinking that this produces an absolutely straight skirt no wider at the hem than at the widest point of the hip?
