I belong to a sewing group, American Sewing Guild, and we are starting a new meetup group that will meet for the first time at Rose City Textiles on October 3rd. So far we are planning to meet the first Saturday of the month from 1-3pm. Whoever shows up can help determine what we’ll do. Rose City Textiles is an outerwear/activewear fabric store in Northwest Portland. They may have a discount for us for meeting there – it has not been determined yet. They do have a great discount section in the back of the store. There’s been talk of a raincoat project, but that depends on how many are interested.
Rose City Textiles 2515 NW Nicolai St Portland, OR 97210 (503) 224-5666 www.rosecitytextiles.com
If anyone wants to come to the other ASG monthly group I go to, the next meeting is Wednesday 8-19 at the meeting room of the Portland Police East Precinct at 737 S.E. 106th Avenue. Judy McKamey will be teaching us all about iron-on vinyl. Here are her instructions for the class.
I will bring iron-on vinyl for everyone to try. I thought we could experiment with what it might work on, such as printed paper, painted fabric, trinkets, flower or leaves. I have tried some fresh flowers, but I am not totally satisfied. What we will need is a couple of irons and pressing surfaces, not necessarily ironing boards. We could sew a cosmetic bag with our newly vinyled fabric. In which case, bring a quarter yard of fabric (fat quarter will work), a 9 inch or longer zipper, thread and regular sewing supplies and machine. Size 14 universal needle works best on sewing thru the vinyl. Also bring a teflon foot for your sewing machine if you have one.
Our projects are never very difficult, and if you’d rather not drag out your machine you’re welcome to just mess with the vinyl or just watch and chat. We also do show and tell, so if you want to bring a newly finished project that’s cool.
The Wednesday group meets the third wednesday of each month. My name is Leigh ( say Lee) and I will gladly welcome you. I tend to get there just at 7, but will try to get there early the next few months.

Hi There!
I would love to be in your sewing club .. I am closest to 82nd and Burnside, (pretty close to you I believe) :) and available in the mornings – or early afternoons (I work swing).
I started sewing a couple of years ago and wold consider myself a beginner – I have not been sewing much lately as I just moved and am immersed in my other (summer) hobby – gardening. I have taken all of the beginner Palmer Pletsch classes and the fit classes – this fall I would like to take the pants class.
I like to sew tops – I have a few in the works – but still getting my sewing room organized since our recent move. Do you have a regular meeting time/place??
Thanks for starting a club!!

hey pdxers!
meeting any amount of time is great. i like the idea of learning together and from each other (i’ll be doing all the learning) with different techniques, ideas, projects, etc. i am really loving clothing construction as well and would love to learn how to make my own things without relying on a pattern.
once a month would be great for me as well. we could also decide to have more frequent meetups that are just kind of “open sewing” style and a chance to get together and help each other with trouble spots, etc.
there is an “open sewing” group at fabric depot the last thursday of the month but it’s $10 and i’d rather just be able to spend that money on fabric!
i will ask around and see if i can find a space where we can all get together w/o having to invade someone’s house and trash it with little threads and pins. anyone have any ideas?
most weekday evenings work great for me and i live in NE as well.
thanks for taking this on!!!

i am interested in design and garment construction. -Also refashioning with quality recycleable clothes or fabric stashes. Meeting once a month would be my first choice, but I’d be happy with every other!

hello! i am from clackamas, and i’m excited to see similar interests in sewing as i have here. I too have just completed several classes with sharon blaire, and think she is an amazing instructor! i would benefit to have the accountability of a sewing group to keep up with. please keep me posted on the progress!

Hi am also interested in being apart of a sewing group in portland! Let me know if anything is going on!
May 5, 2009, 06.05 PMby ell-in-or
Hi Everybody!
I will start a group – Thanks to all who have already said they’re interested.
I live in NE – nearest big cross-street is 82nd and Sandy. We could trade around meeting places depending on the size of the group and where everyone lives. I suggest we meet and talk about what we’d like to do first and when good meeting times/places are.
I have been sewing for years and have recently gotten back into clothing. I’ve done home dec and quilting and I also knit, crochet, do some gardening, and like to dabble in other crafts too.
My sewing goals are to do more fashion sewing and to build my rusty skills back up. Maybe design something to post on Burda! I have taken some classes with Sharon Blair lately and have really enjoyed them. She has beginner through advanced classes and there’s always something starting up. Here’s her link if you’re interested in a more formal class. http://www.portlandsewing.com/
For this group, I’d like to learn a technique and then use it in a garment. Like the Burda ‘Make this blouse’. Learn french seams and then do that shirt or a different one sortof together. Alternatively, depending on the group’s skills and interestes, we could do a Project Runway type challenge. Or mix it up. Show & Tell is always fun too.
Think about how often you’d like to meet and what you all are intersted in doing. Every other month would be good for me, no more often than once a month. I’ve got some other committments and this whole f/t job thing totally cuts into fun-time. :)
Let me know what you all think!

I just found another sewing group at Portland Meet-up. It’s called the Portland Sewing Circle. Here’s the link to join. Check out the info. http://www.meetup.com/The-Portland-Sewing-Circle/
I have not been to one of their meetings, but it sounds like fun. And very inexpensive for a room rental fee. It is difficult to find a place that will allow a group of people access to enough outlets to sew and press, and not have everyone in each others laps AND not pay an arm and a leg.
If you go, let me know how the group is. I can’t make it Thursday evening but may be able to go on the 29th.
