Hi sweet girl! You’ve been lost! How is your diet going? Are you sewing anything? I started sewing again and I can’t stop dreaming of new dresses! Do you like the last burda issues?

Hi Liliv! I feel like I’ve been lost from the sewing community! My diet/exercise routine is going great! Lost over 10 lbs so far – which is why I haven’t cut any fabric lately. The last issue of Burda just may make me get the machine out again though – so many cool summer designs! I’m also revisiting some of the things I made last year with an eye to altering them down to my smaller frame. Anyhow – great to be missed! Thanks so much for writing. You are looking as beautiful as ever and that black tulip dress is just smashing on you!

You’ ve lost weight – this is good news, you must be very slim now! I’m on a diet too but I haven’t seen results so far. I sew my current size because my old clothes are a little small. If I loose weight I will alter the new ones. I’m glad that everything is ok with you and I’m looking forward to seeing some new clothers from you. Hugs and kisses!

Black and white will be perfect! Have decided the pattern? I am not sewing anything these days because I don’t have time and I don’t have inspiration!

What is keeping you so occupied dear? I’m sure you will get back to it one of these days. Sometimes a break is just what you need creatively.

I saw a dress downtown in an exclusive dress maker’s shoppe that was all black except it had a white bodice – just in the front though. I am going to try it using Burda 133 11/2013…what are your thoughts?

I am very busy at work, that’s what is keeping me occupied! I haven’t seen the model 133 11/2013 because I didn’t buy this issue:( A black and white dress will be great my dear!

You are a school teacher, aren’t you? My husband (who is also a teacher) has been crazy busy too at his school! Perhaps it will slow down after the holidays.

Anyhow, the pattern is here -

      http://www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns/animal-print-dress-plus-size-112013

It came out fairly well, although I think sometimes I am my own worst enemy with my fabric choices. The proof will be in the wearing and whether I am comfortable in it or not. :)

Oh that’s great! I really missed you! Yes, just today I made the Hourglass model 109 – 11/2013 but it came out terribly! It was just not for me! Oh, and the layered dress we spoke about last week? Made that one too and it was another mistake! …at least for my shape. But both patterns went together so nicely, I really do like that about the Burda patterns. The problems have more to do with me, and perhaps my fabric choices. Oh well – back to the drawing board! :)

I just don’t know…I keep going through my stash trying to match the right fabric with the right pattern. I have some beautiful red swirled knit fabric for a holiday dress and thought perhaps the Hourglass model would suit it, but after my experience I am rethinking that. Any ideas?

You know I didn’t cut it yet. When I had it on the cutting board I realized it was thinner than I remembered, so it may turn out to be just a top.

How about you? Any sewing plans?

    • _34_large

      Sep 25, 2013, 06.54 AMby liliv-1

Tell me about it! Many times I had planned to make something and changed my mind while having the fabric with the pattern pieces on it and ready to be cut!! For me the decision is the 90% of the whole job. That’s why I make many times the same tested pattern, I don’t want to spend my time thinking and rethinking, I prefer to sew:) A burnt orange top or a cardi will be lovely, this color will look great with your skintone and hair!
As for me: I don’t have any fabrics here, I’ve been waiting for them for more than 10 days to get here but nothing yet! So the plans I had mede in summer have to wait. For now I bought 2 fabrics from a shop here, they are both great but I can’t think for a suitable project for them. It’s not so easy to buy new stuff from the shop here because it is at a big distance from my village and the prices are much higher. In Athens there is a shop with a big collection of fabrics in wholesale prices, I’m a little spoiled because of this. My days are a little boring for the luck of fabric reason:( I have missed sewing and I don’t even have something to alter or refashion:(

Yes, I agree. I also tend to gravitate to the tried and true (and comfortable) patterns. Sorry to hear you don’t have your fabric! I’d feel lost too! If I can get myself moving today (was out late last night, so having a slow start! ) I want to try something completely different…

      http://voguepatterns.mccall.com/v1312-products-27085.php?page_id=174

I’m using a dark green knit fabric (which is left over) for the skirt and a black knit for the bodice. I cut back on the length a bit as I didn’t have quite enough to make it as it’s printed. I"m hoping the slinky knit will drape nicely – especially with all that volume. The pattern calls for over 4 yards of fabric! The skirt has 6 huge pattern pieces!!!!! This is really a trial run as I’m curious what it will turn out to be. The pattern review site has pretty positive reviews, so I’m going to take the plunge.

That is, IF I can get moving! Hahahahaha!

This is a really great pattern and it will be a gorgeous dress. It’s exactly your style! I can’t wait to see it ( I hope that you will post some photos for us to see)!!

      Sep 27, 2013, 02.21 PMby BeeZee

What an interesting pattern. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t feeling good the whole way through the construction of the massive skirt but once I made the bodice and attached it, it fit surprisingly well. I’m really glad I made the skirt with such a drape-y knit – especially since I’m not 6 feet tall and 110 pounds! I’m not sure I will make it again though – one of those voluminous skirts is enough – but I will use the bodice pattern, and perhaps just attach a circle skirt. I still have hemming and finishing to do but I’m relieved it wasn’t a wasted effort. I think it will be a nice holiday dress.

One of these days I will try to get some of my projects photographed…when that day will be I don’t know, I’m so bad with it! :(

I made two versions of 07/2013 #103B – both dresses -using the sherbet knits I had. One is orange and turquoise with a V in front. The second was lavender and rose with V in both front and back.

Then I scaled the plus-size pattern 07/2013 #132 down and made it in red as it was shown but minus the front embellishment. I really love this neckline, so I made the tunic version 07/2013 #131 as a dress in black jersey.

Both of the Burda patterns I tried went together nicely! (Although I am still not sold on the Bandeau dress after making it a second time…but I think that is more due to my shape! Hahaha)

Also made some summer dresses using Vogue 8685, Mc Calls 6697 and a sleeveless version of Butterick
6242. I want to try the halter version of Simplicity 1800 next. They are all in colorful knit prints and are comfortable to wear downtown in the ‘90-plus degree’ weather we’ve been having. ;P xoxoxoxo

Yes! I traced the Bandeau dress, but on plain tissue paper which I had on hand. I have since ordered (and received) some wonderful sewable Swedish tracing paper…but have not had time to use it yet. The first Bandeau dress I made was very much a muslin – probably won’t wear it much further than the park, but I do plan to retrace it onto the good stuff, and sew the view with all the different colors.
‘When’ is another question! My husband is off school now and keeping me busier than usual. We have just had the rainiest June on record, which accounts for my lack of outside photography. Hopefully July will improve that situation and I will be able to share some of my recent projects with you. xoxoxo

    Thanks! I’ll do my best!

How did I start sewing? Making doll clothing for my Barbie doll! Mother used to buy me remnants of fabric and allowed me to use her sewing machine. When I outgrew the dolls, I started sewing for myself. At one time I made almost everything I wore…even my nursing uniforms. I stopped sewing in the late 70’s and it wasn’t until the summer of 2011, when my husband surprised me with a new sewing machine that I took it up again. How about you? When did you begin to sew?

Hey Liliv! Good to hear from you! Funny I was just thinking about you and came here yesterday to see if you finished the navy dress. I’ve been so preoccupied with yard work the last week or so I haven’t had a chance to do much sewing. Just bought a wine colored knit to try Vogue 8904 (the sleeveless version) which will hopefully be my next project when I get back to it.

So, how’s the navy dress coming along?

I love sewing, and wearing knits. They are so comfortable, easy to care for and travel so well. But since I’ve started sewing I’ve encountered one problem that can really make a looks go south – literally. I love circle skirts, but sometimes the weight of them drags the bodice of the dress lower, and skews the waistline. Sometimes it works, sitting a bit low, but other times I think it detracts from the look. There is just such a fine line, and I haven’t really located that line yet!

I think I have to learn how to “let go” of some of my sewing projects that don’t seem to work as well as I’d thought they would. I spent hours today adding a skirt to a bodice I made 2 weeks ago….it was the 3rd time I changed the skirt and I was certain this time it would work. It didn’t. Then I decided perhaps the sleeves were “the problem” so I shortened them…but as I sit her looking at the dress on the hanger, I know I am still not satisfied and I’m saying to myself perhaps if I try thus or such I can save it. Perhaps I should just get over it and start on something new.
