I want to learn how to shop in a vintage shop. My wish is to find some great vintage pieces and add to them to make a modern look. Is there anything I should look for when vintage shopping? Thanks.
Dec 1, 2011, 10.31 PMby mynameisdavid
Hi msc21,
Great question! Vintage and thrift stores are excellent for accessories — purses/bags, scarves and jewelry. I would really start there. They are an easy way to incorporate vintage into your wardrobe, and you’ll be surprised at how they really make an outfit fun!
I would also recommend focusing on how a garment fits before focusing on the color or print. This may seem strange, but I assure you that if something fits really well, you will definitely wear it, and find creative ways to incorporate it into your wardrobe.
Also, if you’re just starting out on your vintage adventure, steer clear of things that you find challenging when shopping in a regular store. For instance, it is very hard for me to find shoes and pants that I like. If I go to a thrift store, or even a regular store, looking to find them, I am always disappointed. Instead, I can always find a nice shirt or accessory that fits me well. You may find that if you choose to invest more money on your challenging pieces, it is easier to find a complimentary piece in a thrift or vintage store.
I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any further questions.

All of the winners have been contacted privately, and next week we are going to post a big recap of all the contests and winners for the months of May and June. For future months, we are going to do monthly recaps, as well.

Hi David, my name is Missy, you kindly commented on my question on my patten siz not coming out the right size. “Each pattern comes in sets of standard 8 1/2 × 11 sheets of paper. Please print each sheet AS IS – do not crop or enlarge the pages. You are provided with a guide that shows you how each pattern must be assembled. For more information on printing and assembling patterns, please copy and paste the following URL in your browser: http://www.burdastyle.com/techniques/printing-patterns-at-home.
Your particularly issue may be related to your Print setting and/or page setup. Check to ensure that your page setup is configured for 8 1/2 × 11 sheets. This is usually done by going to File – Page Setup."
i just think i have confused my self more- as i previously said- im from Australia, and out standard printing size is A4 (which i think is 29.7cm by 21cm or 8.3 by 11.7 inches) the test square is still coming out 0.5mm too small in both directions and i am uncertain why- Does this happen to the test squares where you are
Sorry to be such a pain- i just not certain of what i am doing wrong?
thank you so much for your help Missy

Hi, David! has there been any interest in setting up a BSC in Plano, TX, USA? I know there is a club about an hour drive northwest from here, but that is a really long drive, especially if I have to add in more time for rush hour traffic. I keep seeing one for Dallas ‘coming soon’ but has that actually happened yet? Not to mention that Dallas is a big place with a lot of traffic congestion.

I just added a new Dallas club. Is Dallas too far for you? I’m in the White Rock Lake area. Was thinking a public library would be a good meeting site. Any thoughts?
