Description

Women’s dress sewing pattern available for download. Available in various sizes.

Total femininity. Ankle-length dress with fitted bodice, layered skirt and short gathered sleeves. It’s respectably high cut at the front but the back plunges alluringly down to the waist.

Note: This is the same pattern PDF as the Tiered Dress.

Recommended Materials

Lightweight dress fabrics.

Amount of Fabrics

Cotton batiste print, cut widthwise (skirt doubled).
width: 145 cm (57 ins)
length: 5.40 – 5.65 – 5.90 – 6.20 – 6.40 m
(6 – 6 1/4 – 6 1/2 – 6 7/8 – 7 yds)

Plain ­batiste as lining for bodice, cut lengthwise.
widht: 140 cm (55 ins)
length: 0.45 – 0.45 – 0.45 – 0.50 – 0.50 m (3/4 yd).

Interfacing.

Vilene Bias Tape/ stay tape.

Boning tape, 8 mm (1/4 in) ­wide and 0.30 m (3/8 yd) long.

1 invisible zip, 22 cm (9 ins) long.

  i dont understand the fabric amount, do i really need 6 m of fabric?

    It is a dress with gathered skirt – which would require a lot a fabric to gather. But it depends on how much gathering you would like to see when the dress is done. I just made it shorter in length, and some pleats here and there to save fabric. And I bought 3 yards of the main fabric and 3 yards of lining.

  I don’t undersand the sizing where it says 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 if I purchase it is that the sizes I get? Or does the pattern include all sizes

    When you purchase it, you will get size 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 (petite size) all in one download. Then you have to decide which size you would like to cut out and then go for it.

    This pattern is in Pettie size, so consult the Pettie Size of BurdaStyle, not regular size.

  Oh no! I am in love with this dress but am confused about the available sizes… For Burda patterns I am a 12/14… is it just not available in these sizes? Do you think I can get away with just cutting everything down a bit?

  I’ve been doing some thinking about the yardage requirements of this dress. The skirt piece is cut on the crossgrain so the only seam is at the back where the zip is.

  If you cut the skirt on grain instead you will need to sew two or three pieces together to have the same amount of gather – like the Sewaholic Cambie dress. And, the pattern tells you to line the skirt with self fabric.

  To cut down on fabric, I would recommend cutting the fabric on grain (either use a skirt pattern from something like the Cambie or find a tutorial for a dirndl skirt) and lining with another fabric (or not at all if your fabric is not sheer). Your yardage will be twice your skirt length (plus hem and seam allowance) plus 3/4 yard for the bodice.

  You might get away with less fabric if you can fit the bodice pieces alongside the skirt pieces.

  The number one complaint I’ve seen from people is the back riding up. I’d try to fix the riding up with a waist stay. A waist stay is a piece of petersham, grograin or firm elastic that is snug (not tight) around your waist.

  The waist stay is stitched to the waist seam of your dress (you may have to ease the seam to the stay) with a hook and eye or snap to close it under the zip. The waist stay should then anchor the dress to your waist and stop it from riding up in back.

  I myself am trying to figure out how the bottom panels work…..do you fold them lengthwise and do lots of gathering around the bodice from there?!?! My first burda pattern…it’s going slowly : ) thanks
