On a built by wendy kick...

I'm an astronomer working at the University of Hawaii. I also love playing ultimate frisbee, gardening, and of course, sewing. Part of what drew me to the burdastyle website is that I made a New Year's resolution for 2007 not to buy anything new (no shoes, clothes etc). I just got fed up with the consumerism that dominates here in the U.S. So, I find my fabric and as many notions as possible at garage sales or recycle fabric from thrift center clothes. I'm amazed at how much money I've saved, which is good since I'm getting married in April 2008 and can use every penny!

KALLERS's WALL (8)
Hey Kallers! Thank you very much for your comment on my JJ top. Keep up the great work!
I really enjoyed making the Alabama Stitch corset and I think you will too. I freehanded the daisy design without a stencil which I wouldn't recommend unless you are doing a simple thing like daisies. I also bound the edges without using a "stretchable stitch" because I didn't feel like those areas needed stretch. My only other advice might be to raise the neckline a little bit. I had to wear a camisole underneath it to keep from showing massive amounts of cleavage and I don't have a whole lot of cleavage to begin with! Good luck! I look forward to seeing your results!
thanks for the positive feed back. In general I just made sure to measure my size compared to the pattern (which I printed out). So for example my shirt extends far longer than the patterns longest length. But being as skinny as I am, I was within the width of the pattern. Lydia has curvy sides, which men don't need, so you can take a straight line from the arm pit to the bottom of the shirt, or just soften the curve a bit. Also the collar is to deep for any self respecting man so copy the shape of a T shirt collar for the front (you can keep the shape of the back, I did). The sleeves from the pattern are unisex as far as I can tell.
I just wanted to say that I love your Laura dress. The pattern is fantastic!
I read in your profile that you're an astronomer. Do you have a specialty?
Oh, I've forgotten what you mentioned above in your profile! Sorry for suggesting to buy a new fabric... But if I can say, I think it is not that bad to purchase new/recycled fabrics for own clothes. Because it takes ages to sew a cloth, we can't consume too many clothes, anyway. It always makes me think of what is really needed to me. I can be very cautious about what I am going to do (in the meaning of having new clothes). I hope what I wrote is understandable... I am a so-called "ecologist" and am fairly against the world globalism, so I think I know how you feel about THE consumerism.
Hi Kallers, thank you for posting the comment on the leopard sarah. About "where"...I didn't know that I was about to confess my cheating! ;) I really wanted that kind of fabric for a while but I couldn't find the one. So I moaned a lot, then one of my best friends kindly gifted me this leopard from her pile of stash. You can try the same but nobody would be sure the result... Anyhow, I know your situation very well. I buy all fabrics from the internet fabric stores. I would look for the one on the internet stores. I remember that there is a topic (Cool Fabric...? don't remember the exact title) in the forum about the internet stores. It might help you. I hope you'll find a lovely fabric for Sarah!
What a wonderful, inspiring New Year's resolution:) Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!
Great job on the western shirt! What a great find - that vintage pattern worked well ;-)
