Sew Natural Looking Bust Darts (6018 Views)
If you are dissatisfied with the way your bust darts turn out (aka: looks like you're very cold and nipply), here's a simple way to curve them and make them more "boosie" shaped.

Step 1 of 8
To make natural looking bust darts that are rounded about your bust, try using a curved dart seam instead of the traditional straight darts. Please bear with me, as I am a terrible teacher, and this is my first how-to... good luck! Oh yes, the image quality is somewhat poor, but the general idea is illustrated relatively well.
-
Step 2 of 8
Make sure your pattern has bust darts, to start, such as these.
-
Step 3 of 8
When you cut out your pattern pieces, be sure to mark the bases as well as the apex, and remember to mark the INSIDE of the fabric.
-
Step 4 of 8
Line up the bases of your dart and pin. Be sure that the mark for the dart's apex is on the edge of the fold.
-
Step 5 of 8
The whole trick is to sew a single, fluid curve, just like the natural curve of the bust. To guestimate, sew about half way down to the mid-width of the dart…
-
Step 6 of 8
…Then curve to dart marks. I HOPE that makes sense. Keep reading...
-
Step 7 of 8
Ta-Da! Remember to tie your threads at the apex (and the base, if you wish) of your dart... I am not sure if that is something you HAVE to do, but I read it somewhere, and hey - why not?
-
Step 8 of 8
And there you have it. The curved dart on the left, and the traditional straight dart on the right. You be the judge, choose which one is right for you, and wear it with pride!

fabric, any pattern with bust darts, fabric marking pencil, sewing machine
