Change a mens shirt into a dress! (15596 Views)
You can see the result of this in my creation: http://www.burdastyle.com/creations/show/5733
I am not very good at explaining things so please tell if there is something you don't understand!
view all steps
-
Step 1 of 7
Take a mens shirt (I used XL) and on the back side from the ends of the back yoke draw two lines to the corners of the shirt. Cut along these lines both the front and the back together making sure the shirt as flat as possible
-
Step 2 of 7
Sew the two side seams and measure yourself above the bust.
-
Step 3 of 7
Find somewhere on one of the sleeves that fits half of that measurement plus seam allowance. Cut a strip that length (half the overbust measurement+seam allowance). The width should be about 3 cm plus seam alowance on each side.
Instead of this step you could use bias tape in the length of your over bust measurement.
-
Step 4 of 7
Now you can either gather the fabric on the top to this length (easier), or put an elastic, or you can make pleats (what I did).
To make pleats, measure how long the shirt is all around at the top and deduct your overbust measurement from that. The number you have left is the amount of fabric you have to make your pleats out of. I measured 5 cm from either side of the button placket and made pleats there. You can see how to make pleats here: http://www.burdastyle.com/howtos/show/185
-
Step 5 of 7
Then finish off the top edge with your bias tape or the strips you cut out from the sleeves. If you are doing the latter, first press the strip in half and edges towards the crease (like bias tape), pin in on and sew it like bias tape! (You might also have to add a button there depending..)
-
Step 6 of 7
This step is optional.
You can make straps out of the same material you finished off the top with by just sewing the open edges together and then sew them to your dress!
-
Step 7 of 7
Done! Go and show off your new shirtdress!
But most of all tell me if there is something you don't understand, because I'm sure there's lots!
This how to is especially sloppy because I didn't have time to take proper pictures. I hope you can still understand it , and when I can, I will upload better pictures!

I made a shirt the exact same way as you made this dress a while ago but I just never posted the pictures. This is great though.

Thank you for a how-to using dress shirts. My spouse is retired and no longer wears his work shirts. Now I have a real use for them. Nehmah
