The super easy to sew, easy to wear dress that you can wear at least 7 different ways.

Step 1 of 9
Buy your fabric. Something stretchy so you don't have to put a zipper in! You'll need enough to make your straps about the same length as you plus a third more. (Example: I'm 5' 3" so I'll need 63"+21"=84".) I bought 3 yards.
-
Step 2 of 9
Cut out your circle skirt (or whatever kind of skirt you'd like). I used the tutorial from making things blog.
-
Step 3 of 9
Cut out your straps, which are just big rectangles. To find the width of your strip, measure from the middle of your underarm to the middle of your bust, going over the widest part. My measurement came out to be 13.5". The length will be your height+ a third more. It just depends on your preference whether or not you'd like longer straps or not. Mine came out to be 70" because I didn't have enough fabric.
-
Step 4 of 9
Cut out another rectangle. This will be your waist band. I measured my waist for the width and made the height 12 inches. I cut the width at exactly my measurement (no seam allowances) because I want it to fit a little tighter, since it's stretch material. The band will be folded over which is why I made it 12 inches. If you'd like a shorter waist band just make it shorter.
-
Step 5 of 9
Sew the shorter ends of your waist band together to make a tube.
-
Step 6 of 9
Start pinning the pieces together! In the front, the straps will overlap each other a little bit, about a quarter of it's width. I overlapped mine by about 4 inches.
-
Step 7 of 9
This is the hardest part of making the dress, which isn't hard at all. Pin all the pieces together. The outer layer is the waist band, the middle layer are the straps, and the inner layer is the skirt.
-
Step 8 of 9
Turn it inside out and you're done! This is what it should look like.

Step 9 of 9
Ta da.... convertible dress with 2 seams! You can wear it a million ways. Here's just one. Hope my tutorial wasn't too confusing or wordy!

i will have to try this as soon as i find the right material will let you know how it works out
i love this kind of dresses, it's a great how to, i only need to find some good (and cheap) fabric thanks!
Nicey :) I made this dress following the Rostitchery Tutorial. I didn't do it with a circle skirt and instead of using stretchy material I put an elastic in it. I like the waistband you have though, it seems to be useful (sometimes I have to do my best to not have my tummy sticking out somewhere). I'll post pictures of my dress linked to this how-to some time!
yee! is simple and a great dress! Thak's!!! I was thinking this is more complicated, but this is so simple!!!!
I made this last night in a heavy pink jersey fabric. It took about 2 hours - it's fab and looks great - very Grecian!
Thanks for a good way to use up some very stretchy grey jersey. Nehmah
oh cool! I've got a ton of this impulse-buy rosy-peach colored fabric that I've been regretting buying...now I can make something simple and versatile out of it! yayyy
Great tut! What kind of stitch/thread did you use? I'm utterly paranoid about starting my dress >_<, Thanks!
incuvana: I used a serger and just used whatever thread was already on it. I'm not too familiar with using it, sorry I can't help you out more! I assume that if you used a regular sewing machine you'd use a zig zag stitch though. Just play around with a scrap piece of fabric :)
leeavent: I have more photos in my "creations" and also in my flickr, which you can find in my profile.
