  Step 1 of 5

  First, print the Technical Croqui pattern PDF document here. Notice the stylelines and guidelines. There are lines showing the midline of the body, bustlevel, princess seams, neckline, etc. Use these to help you judge how you want your garment to hang on the body. The bent arm is to help illustrate any detail on the back of the sleeve. If you are drawing a garment with very voluminous sleeves or pantleg, you make need to show the arms and/or legs further away from the body to show the detail.

  Step 2 of 5

  Lay a blank piece of paper over the croqui. If you have a light box, this is a nice time to use it. You can also use tracing paper if you prefer, but usually, for me, I find a plain piece of printer paper works just fine.

  Step 3 of 5

  In pencil, work on your design. Use the guidelines to make sure your illustration is symmetrical. I have no natural talent at drawing, so I like to use a ruler to keep things as even as possible.

  Step 4 of 5

  Now, draw the back of your garment. I like to put the illustration of the back a little lower and to the right of the front side, but side-by-side is fine too.

  Step 5 of 5

  I’m kind of a messy drawer, so I like to use a Micron pen to outline my drawing and then erase all the pencil. Now I have a nice clean technical illustration! This method is great for thinking through new designs, and/or for submissions to BurdaStyle contests!
