Hem Pleats (4204 Views)

Hemming pleats can be tricky. One choice is to hem the fabric before you pleat it, but if that is not an option here are instructions for hemming after pleating. Basically, you are training the pleats to fold the opposite direction below the hem foldline.

Step 1 of 9

First, mark your hem while the pleats are folded.
Step 2 of 9

Pull the pleats flat, and mark hem across the entire length.
Step 3 of 9

Iron out the original creases below the hemline as best you can.
Step 4 of 9

Fold at hemline, ironing on the fold inbetween the pleats, being careful not to iron out any of the creases.
Step 5 of 9

Fold the first pleat.
Step 6 of 9

Iron along the crease.
Step 7 of 9

Fold the second crease.
Step 8 of 9

Iron along crease. Repeat repeat repeat repeat...

Machine or handstitch the hem and enjoy your beautiful new pleated hem!

For some reason the rating doesn't work. I wanted to rate it 5 buttons because I felt it was well presented. People really need to learn to discern ratings fairly on the qualities of a tutorial, not rating on how hard the project is!
