  Measure and cut towels (if you aren't using store-bought towels). Towel measurements vary greatly, so you have plenty of flexibility here. To get one set (2 bath towels and 2 hand towels) out of 2 1/4 yard of 57" wide terry cloth, cut the two bath towels 31" wide from selvage to selvage, and the hand towels 19" wide. We incorporated the selvage into the hem of the bath towels.

  Cut decorative fabric and interfacing the width of your towels. We made ours six inches high for both the hand towels and the bath towels, but in retrospect, if think I would make the bath towel's a little shorter, maybe 2 inches. Apply interfacing to wrong side of decorative fabric.

  Step 2 of 5

  Cut 2 lengths of bias tape per piece of decorative fabric. Originally I thought it would be nice to have a contrasting trim on the hand-towel, but in hindsight I think matching is nicer.

  Step 3 of 5

  Sew bottom half of fold-over tape to long edges of decorative fabric (see photo). Fold tape over, pin decorative fabric to towels. We positioned ours 5" from the hem for both bath and hand towels, but if I were to do it over I would place the hand towel's trim an inch or two closer to the hem.

  Step 4 of 5

  Sew fabric to towel, through top of fold-over tape.

  Finish raw edges of towels with fold-over tape. Wa-la! Fancy towels!
