Make a Fascinator (17374 Views)

A fascinator is like a tiny hat with a base and any number of embellishments on top. Make one using scraps from your latest project!

    Step 1 of 13

First of all, make the base of your fascinator out of stiff plastic. I used an old plastic lampshade but you could equally use something like a milk jug or CoolWhip container. Cup your hand with you fingers as the point and trace around that to get a nice teardrop shape. At the bulbous end, cut a slit and overlap slightly so the piece cups your head. Staple a few times so it stays.

Materials

Stiff plastic, fleece or felt scraps, fashion fabric scraps, hot glue gun, plastic hair comb, embellishments (netting, feathers, braid, flowers, buttons, etc)

I love this! It's ingenious, as well as the fact that I adore things from the first half of the 20th century.

i just bought a book on hat making (millinery) by eugenia kim, who went to parsons. apparently the best material to use for this kind of project, pillbox hats, cocktail hats, etc is buckram. i got some at joanns and it shapes really well. if you really want to get into hat making, check out her book. it's called saturday night hat.

What a lovely fascinator. This has given me the incentive to have a go at hats again as I have moved near a racecourse where wearing one is the in thing. How ingenious to think of using a lampshade - shows how it pays to think outside of the box!

This is so great. Any ideas on where to find cool old feathers or vintage silk flowers?

I can't believe I actually found instructions on how to make one of these. I've been wanting to make one for my halloween costume. Thanks!
