Cuff links (3350 Views)
A simple way to make cuff links for wide-cuffed shirts and jackets (shown here with the Emily blouse.)

Step 1 of 8
For this project, you'll need four buttons, the kind with shanks on the back (they're your cufflinks, you can make them matching or not, but they should be about the same size for ease of making buttonholes if it's a new project or fitting them in buttonholes if it's a ready-made shirt.) Cut two lengths of wire--8-10 inches should be plenty. Bend one piece of wire in half like this.
-
Step 2 of 8
Put one button on one side of the wire, slide down to the bend in the middle.
-
Step 3 of 8
Put a second button on one side of the wire (doesn't matter which), slide down to approximately 1/2" (or 1.3 cm) above the first button. Make a bend in the wire. Bend the wire so it makes a figure-8 shape, with the crossover between the two buttons and the ends going in opposite directions.
-
Step 4 of 8
Put a second button on one side of the wire (doesn't matter which), slide down to approximately 1/2" (or 1.3 cm) above the first button. Make a bend in the wire. Bend the wire so it makes a figure-8 shape, with the crossover between the two buttons and the ends going in opposite directions.
-
Step 5 of 8
Take one of the wire ends, bend it up at the center of the figure-8 so it crosses the wire. Begin wrapping it around the two pieces of wire up towards the button shank. 3-5 wraps should do it, depending on the thickness of the wire.
-
Step 6 of 8
Once you get close to the button shank, pull the end of the wire through the button shank (the wire will be running through the shank twice now). Trim off the excess wire and push the end into the center of the cone formed by the wire to hide the end and keep it from snagging your sleeve!
-
Step 7 of 8
Repeat steps #5 and 6 going the other direction on your cuff link. The result will look something like this.
-
Step 8 of 8
Repeat steps #1-7 with your other two buttons and piece of wire. You now have a pair of custom cufflinks!
Coming as soon as I take the pictures:a suggestion for how to wear with the Emily blouse.

Thank you, Sunnyb64. I'm going to take a shot at this for gifts this year. Nehmah
Thanks, Sunnyb64! I have a jewelry making business and have been thinking about branching out into men's accessories for a long time. I do a lot of work with vintage buttons so this is a great find for me. - Mel
cool idea, ladies cuff links could be cool.
Moushka-- they were buttons from the stash, pretty sure they originally came from Joann Fabrics though (I forget which brand, but it was one of the major manufacturers that you find in American fabric stores.)
