How to place marks on stubborn fabrics (3607 Views)

    Step 1 of 1

When dealing with fabrics that won't take chalk markings very well (either because the chalk rubs off easily, or will stain the fabric, or the print is too busy to notice them), I sew very quick Xs onto the fabric where the marks occur. I do this by knotting one end, sewing a quick X, and then leaving the tail free. This means it can be removed easily with a seam ripper (even if it's been caught in a seam), but doesn't fall out of its own accord. For patterns with two different sets of markings (like the circle and star marks in this pattern), I use different types of thread for each type of mark. In this case, I've used pink thread for the circles and black thread for the stars.

Great for fraying fabric. If the fabric does not fray easily, I sometimes make a little cut in the edge of the seam allowance at a distance from the seam line, perpendicular to the seam line.
