Step 1 of 10
To make this alteration, you need only to alter the upper bodice front and back pieces. Begin by marking off the seam allowance on your desired size, to see the actual sewing line. All alterations will be made to the sewing line, and then seam allowance will be added on again at the very end.
-
Step 2 of 10
Measure along front shoulder seam, from the neckline, 2 3/8” (7.5 cm) and mark a point. This will be your new shoulder seam width. Measure down the side seam from the armhole and mark a point at 3/8” (1 cm). This will make the armhole opening a bit bigger.
-
Step 3 of 10
Mark these same points on the back piece
-
Step 4 of 10
Measure along the armhole, from the top down, marking a point every 1 ½” (3 cm). These marks will be used to measure from in the next step, to create the new armhole.
-
Step 5 of 10
Make the marks illustrated with the pins above by measuring out from the marks you made in the last step, according to the following measurements.
From 1- measure out 1 3/8” (3.5 cm)
From 2- measure out 1” (2.5 cm)
From 3- measure out ¼” cm (.635 cm)
From 4- measure out ¼” cm (.635 cm)
-
Step 6 of 10
Connect the dots, using a French curve. Use your designers eye to smooth out any uneven lines, and now you’ve got your front armhole.
-
Step 7 of 10
Measure along the back armhole, marking every 11/2” (3 cm) intervals, like you did in the front. 8. Again, Make the marks illustrated with the pins above by measuring out from the marks you made in the last step, according to the following measurements.
From 1- measure out 2 ¼” (5.8 cm)
From 2- measure out 2 ½” (6.5 cm)
From 3- measure out 2 ¼” (5.8 cm)
From 4- measure out 1 3/8” (3.5 cm)
-
Step 8 of 10
Connect the dots, using a French curve, and complete the back armhole. Lay the shoulder seams of your pieces together to make sure they are the same length. The new pink line represents the new armhole. Mark ticks through your old sewing line, so as not to get confused, and then add seam allowance all around.

Step 9 of 10
Sew up. If you want, you can add piping, which you can see here!

It's very nice, too. But I'm going to make it with sleeves. :-)
Gorgeous! If only i went somewhere formal enough to wear such a beautiful dress. I could wear it while washing the dishes maybe? :) Alternatively i could make it more casual.
I think you might have goofed on the first measurement, 2 3/8", because it looks like on your picture of the pattern you're altering, it's 2 7/8", which is the one that worked for me... :D
