  Step 1 of 13

  Begin by measuring yourself around the waist or wherever you want the skirt to sit. This is measurement A- waistband length.

  Step 2 of 13

  The waistband final width should be 2” (5 cm). Cut a rectangular shaped piece as long as this A measurement, and that is 2 X the width (B). Add seam allowance added to the top and bottom, and to the side seams (everywhere illustrated with arrows above). This is a folded over waistband, you can cut two separate pieces.

  Fold waistband in half along length to create crease. Interface half of the waistband.

  Step 4 of 13

  Now to cut the skirt pieces. Cut 2 pieces of your fabric: 42” X 25” (114 cm X 63.5 cm). * The longer edges will be gathered and sewn onto the skirt. The 25” length reaches just past the knees, and can later be shortened with hemming.

  Step 5 of 13

  If you are using a non-stretchy fabric, Cut one of the squares in half, along the length. This will be the center back seam where a zipper will be inserted. You should have three pieces that look like this now. **If you are using a stretch fabric, you do not need to cut one of the pieces in half because you won’t need a Center Back seam. You will only have two identical looking squares.

  Step 6 of 13

  Mark the Center Front on both the waistband and the skirt by folding each piece in half.

  Step 7 of 13

  Sew side seams. I added in-seam pockets to mine first, which you can learn how to do here.

  Step 8 of 13

  Sew long, loose basting stitches running along the top of the whole piece.

• 

  Step 9 of 13

  Match the Center Front and center backs on the skirt to the waistband. Distribute gathers evenly, perhaps by splitting into halves and then quarters as illustrated in Sister Diane's Even Gathers tutorial.

  Step 10 of 13

  Insert your zipper if you are using one. You can follow the instructions in SquirellyPoo's How To.

  Step 11 of 13

  Fold waistband in, wrong sides facing, and topstitch from right side.

• 

  Step 12 of 13

  Sew a hook and eye above the zipper to fully close the skirt. Hem to a desired length. Then, party! This skirt is excellent for twirling in, one of my favorite activities. . .
