make a flutter/batwing sleeve top from the Lydia pattern (5264 Views)
I made this shirt before the Lydia pattern came only, shaping it with a bit of trial and error. The Lydia pattern finally gives me the opportunity to explain it in a way which can be easily replicated. The tree girl shirt has raw edges at neckline, sleeves and hem.

Step 1 of 8
On the front pattern piece, make the neckline about 7 cm higher and draw a slightly pointy curve (I'm guessing a bit here, but if your neckline is too high, you can still change it, not so when it's too low...)
-
Step 2 of 8
this will be your new neckline
-
Step 3 of 8
to make the flutter/batwing sleeve, place a ruler along the shoulder line of the front pattern piece and draw a line outwards.
-
Step 4 of 8
now place the ruler along the side of the pattern piece and draw a line up until it meets the elongated shoulder line.
-
Step 5 of 8
This is the new front. When you cut it out of the fabric, make sure to mark the location of the underside of the armhole in the original pattern, so you'll now how far to close the side seam.
-
Step 6 of 8
Repeat steps 3 and 4 at back pattern piece. The shoulder seam at the back isn't straight, so you have to find a line that works. I placed the ruler along about a third of the line, closest to the shoulder.
-
Step 7 of 8
Measure the new shoulder lines. Front and back need to have the same length. Adjust if necessary.
-
Step 8 of 8
Your pattern is now ready. If you want to finish the edges, you can add a neckline facing (or use rib band) and narrowly hem the sleeves.
