Step 1 of 19
These are the two main pieces you will need. The top front piece and the back piece. Sleeves are optional.
-
Step 2 of 19
for the top piece, fold it at the "shorten or lengthen here" line. cut 2 pieces for top front.
-
Step 3 of 19
for the back piece, you will want to lengthen it. I made it to hit at my hips, so I added 6 inches. Align to the pattern curve and cut 1 piece.
-
Step 4 of 19
For the top bottom piece, align top pattern piece at armpit of back piece cut out, see picture. I used the folded back bottom as pattern to cut out 1 piece for front bottom.
-
Step 5 of 19
Align the back and front top pieces at shoulder. Measure the neck line. Mine at 34 inches.
-
Step 6 of 19
so you want to cut out 4 of 4 inch x 17 inch(half of neck line) rectangles.
-
Step 7 of 19
sew the seams in the order indicated to create the cowl collar.
-
Step 8 of 19
There, a preview of the neck line. "Ruche" the two ends.
-
Step 9 of 19
-
Step 10 of 19
-
Step 11 of 19
Then you want to sew the collar onto the neck line. Align center of collar to center back, then pin down sides. Sew.
-
Step 12 of 19
Flip it over, next we will pin it to front bottom.
-
Step 13 of 19
Align the right side (that will fit on you) to the front bottom piece. You can adjust depending which side you want on top.
-
Step 14 of 19
a preview of right side on top.
-
Step 15 of 19
so when you pin you want to align the sides first and let the center fall however far it goes.
-
Step 16 of 19
for the left piece, you will finally be overlapping the pieces. careful the overlapping part could be tough to sew depending on your fabric.
-
Step 17 of 19
Sew the side seams. unfortunately, our very easy cutting method results in a slight variation in length because of the seam allowance. Just align, sew, and cut if you don't mind.
-
Step 18 of 19
so that's seems reasonably easy right? If you don't want sleeves, leave it like this.
-
Step 19 of 19
or you can use the Idit sleeve and get this :)
Good luck!

That's a great idea. I want to make that, too. I don't always want to wear a shirt under the top.
This is awesome! Thank you so much for sharing your technique with clear instructions!
